Just to offer my two cents i have had it happen on my 440I. It had gone from sport plus to comfort by itself a few times since i owned it but never put much thought into it.

I believe that Comfort Mode is the default, so if your car's computer is seeing some type of issue, even if it doesn't cause a check engine light, the issue may be making it go into Comfort Mode. It could be worth while to pull the codes to see of something has been logged. Many issues need to hit a certain number of occurrences before the computer will report them as a problem.
