Charging pad cooling experiment
I’m running a quick test to see if simply air cooling the phone is enough to address the overheating problem. I ordered 5 volt fans on Amazon and 3D printed a holder for it that sits in the opposite side of the console. If it solves the problem I’ll print something with better fit and finish that also replaces the used USB port.

I ran a quick test today with Waze running on my iphone while sitting on the charging pad with the fan just sitting as shown blowing air towards the bottom of the phone. it dropped the temperature of the phone from 105 degrees to 90, which was enough to keep the phone screen from dimming from overheating. The next step is to design and print a plenum that routes the air across the length of the phone and fits the fan and the slot more snuggly. I’ll post updates once I get there…

I haven’t verified this yet, but I think it get’s hot when the phone is using the GPS running Waze.

I'm almost done with a more finished fan enclosure. I'm just printing the prototype now. Hopefully will have it done tomorrow. Here are some work in progress diagrams.

Would agree with that & say Hotter with Waze. Have not found the pad regardless of app to be as cool as plugging into the USB port.

The top shell is currently printing and the other part is the base with the on/off switch and USB cable to power it.

I had to do some rework, but here is the first prototype. I’ll try it out tomorrow and see how it works. This is made from PLA, which isn’t great in high heat environments or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. I’ll probably have to make a resin version which would look more commercial grade and do better in high temp. If there is enough demand I may look into getting injection molded parts made. One step at a time…
