Is there a break-in period for the Z4 M40i?

I just picked up a 2022 Z4 M40i on Monday and was wondering if there was any break-in period for the car before I really open in up? Is there a certain number of miles I need to drive?

Welcome & congratulations on the car, it's a great ride.
Yes, there's a break-in period; it's 1200 miles and you should keep the engine revs below 4500rpm during that time, avoid gunning it, etc.

Thanks, out of the excitement I might have gone over 4500rpm the second day I had the car going up the entrance ramp to I-95. That was the one time it occurred and I could smell some oil or lubricant burning off the engine, what happens if this is done?

Once or twice isn’t gonna hurt the car. Just don’t make it a habit.

Thanks, I now feel better for committing this faux pas. I have only gunned it that one time and will resist temptation again until I hit 1200 miles.

I drove up from Hallandale Beach to Delray Beach and back today on the Florida Turnpike and kept it under 3,000 rpm.

I have another question related to the break-in period, does it make any difference if I drive in Sport mode as opposed to Comfort?

Sport mode keeps the RPM’s higher and tends to rev higher more quickly, so keeping it under 4500 is more challenging. I’m still under 1200 miles so I tend to drive mostly in comfort mode, but occasionally put it in sport mode for some quick acceleration and have to throttle back pretty quickly to keep it under 4500. It really wants to go…

Good point, I am going to keep it in Comfort even though it is so tempting to drive in Sport or Sport Plus. I feel like a kid in a candy store who isn’t allowed to eat anything.

You can drive around in Sport, it's not hard to keep the car under 4500rpm. The car has a lot of power under there. Even post break-in I don't go over that RPM much.
