Z4 M4 on track

A friend of mine ran a 1:43 at Laguna in my 2024 Z4 M4. Damn good for a completely stock car! Even passed a GT3.

The GT3 driver was either slow or not trying, but yeah it certainly meets or beats an M2 out there!

I'm curious what times other cars have run on that track. I guess I'll have to crack open Google tomorrow.

Which Laguna track did your friend run?

1:43 is pretty decent for a stock z4 m40i. I had a similar time back in July at Laguna. Tires, brake pads/fluid, and a little more camber up front would make it perfect

I’m curious if it makes a difference to hotlap with the top up. I didn’t care enough at the time to do it. Top down is much more enjoyable

I didn't notice him using the paddles. Did he run in Sport Plus and let the Z8 do all the shifting?

Good question! In some of the various YouTube videos I’ve seen it’s kinda hard to see the paddles being used due to fingers being obscured.

Thanks for posting that, love watching the Z make it's rounds. I'd love an opportunity to run Laguna, but definitely with better tires than the conti's that came on the Z.

Mine came with the Michelins and they feel near perfect on the car for me.

IMHO, Michelins are the better tire and perfectly suited for the Z4!

Mine has the contis probably explains the slower lap time

Sub 1:40 is possible with 200tw tires
I managed a 1:40 many years ago with a 135i with full M3 suspension. Similar power to the z4

But yes 1:43 stock in the z4 is amazing

The track is Laguna Seca located in Monterey.

Most HPDE cars will run 1:35 to 1:45.

Very nice! Thanks for posting this.

This car can be tricky handling at the limit, you can see it when your friend has to make some quick corrections ...the suspension loads up too quickly and then releases it all with sharp rebound. More compression would greatly improve its handling. But for street use, the Z4's suspension is very good, and obviously, as your friend demonstrated, it can work just fine on a track.

With the go fast red interior that 1:43 is pretty amazing. My cognac interior would only be able to do a 1:50.

Ok, slightly on-topic. For those that have tracked their cars, how do the rules work for HPDE and up with a convertible?

The HPDI at my closest track (Corvette track) welcomes convertibles, but the HDPE states "Convertibles MUST HAVE SCCA legal rollover protection to participate in HPDEs".

While doing a track course in my Fiat Spider, they required the top to be up, but it was in their own cars and a follow the leader, so not exactly full out.

Is this track specific? Does the Z4 meet that requirement? Has anyone any experience with this?
