I think the reason most parents, including mine, buy a BMW or any other safer, yet more expensive car is to protect their "investment." Why put your child in a unsafe car if you can afford a safer car. (I am not saying you can't get cheaper cars that are safe but generally BMW's Audi's and Mercedes' are safer than a 20k car.

BMW's are no more or less safer than many "cheaper" cars. Basically what it comes down too, is that your parents are just as concerned how you're viewed within your peer group are you are.
