Surprisingly uneventful and I am driving in Ohio! In my M235 I lost 4 tires in 3 years due to potholes / debris and those were 18" wheels. So far Z4 19"s despite the low diameter tires (35s) have been without issues and the ride is smooth in Comfort Mode. Of course when you go Sport Plus their suspension stiffens up and you will have more impact - but even that I view not as dramatic.
Furthermore, the 19" set-up looks so much better re: wheel gap - YMMV.

You need to specify the Adaptive M Suspension to get the most comfortable ride. This also gives you the option of a stiffer sporty ride when you want it. No problem with the 19" wheels, and they look great.

Driving a Z4 in Chicagoland … I am very impressed with how the G29 handles potholes compared to my E89. Still, wouldn't exactly seek them out.

And of course, this isn't a Lexus. Don't be expecting super smooth 'as if on a cushion of air' driving, even in Comfort (which really should be labeled 'Standard' IMHO).
