Question weight difference between 330i and 335i

I'm just doing some thinking.

The 330i is lighter than the 335i.

330i: 3417lbs (manual)
335i: 3616lbs (manual)

The n52 engine is approximately 75lbs lighter than the n54 due to the magnesium in the construction and the aluminum cylinder sleeves. The n54 requires a full aluminum block and iron cylinder sleeves due to the pressure and heat the turbo setup produces.

So, if the 330i is 200lbs heavier than the 335i, and 75lbs is from the engine, where does the other 125lbs come from?

please discuss.

BMW's marketing division. They never make accurate weight estimates.

I thought the 335i has bigger brakes?
Also the 335i has two separate mufflers instead on one double pipes mufflers on the 330i.

What does that supposed 75lbs difference include? Just the long block, or is it the entire engine + accessories? Things like oil coolers, intercoolers, turbos and associated hardware can add a lot. Also, as was mentioned the exhaust and brakes are different (there's more of both).

I think JeremyDS got it.

Sure the N54 is only 75lbs heavier; but then you add the turbos, intercooler, and all the tubing/brackets.

+1 I think JeremyDS is right, too. As for the brakes, the front brakes on the 335i are bigger (13.7 versus 13.0) the rears are the same (13.2). Not much weight difference there.

Not trying to hijack....I did not realize there was a difference in rotor size for the fronts between the two years.

This sounds like a potential easy upgrade.

Great idea! (once out of warranty, of course)

As far as it being 'easy', I do know that when I upgraded my '00 323Ci's front brakes to those of the 328, I had to change the 'carriers' in front, because they would not support the larger size rotor. But other than that, very noticeable improvement....especially much better ability to tailgate at a high speed..(LOL).

Are the front rotors really 13.7 inches? My first car (93 Honda Civic DX) had freaking 13 inch steel wheels.

The 60-0 and 70-0 stopping distances I've seen is the same for all the sedans whether 325i (11.0" front and rear), 328i (11.8" front and rear), 330i (13" front, 13.2" rear), or 335i (13.7" front, 13.2" rear). Presumably, tires would make the biggest difference in stopping distance. The larger brakes of the 330i and 335i should make for better fade resistance (better cooling), but not for quicker stopping.

Reported brake sizes here:

I always thought the 325i and 328i had the same size (11.8") brakes, but according to that site, the 325i brakes are a little smaller at 11.0".

Brakes aren't covered in warranty anyway. You can safely upgrade to 335i brakes as long as you have the wheels to clear them.
