easily the biggest BMW news of the day! A NON-M car with a manual is great news!

I'm not so sure I like only the seats being cognac. It feels like the seats don't belong somehow.

For me, a convertible is a requirement for a fun car.
I love convertibles, and I had a vert F-Type S that I loved, but I already have my modified NB miata, which I drive exclusively with the top down. This will be a daily as well for me.

I'm actually not huge on convertibles, although I think it'll be fun to experience it's not what I am after. I want an inline 6, manual, rear wheel drive car and there aren't many other options. Considered the Supra quite a bit and decided I was a bit more of a Z4 guy. But if I owned a Supra, and liked it, moving to a Z4 would be a lateral move and not worth the cost.
Well there is the M2 M3 and M4 those are all options with a manual as well. Just an observation.

I've never had or wanted a convertible. I'm slightly concerned I'm not going to like it.

Have to agree there it looks strange with just the cognac seats. Also not a fan of that look.

Agree with all the comments about the Cognac interior...should be the full treatment....

So close to being a perfect package…gotta offer bronze or gold wheels if you’re going to offer green and tan!

Very true. The Nissan Z isn't super far off either.

I should clarify an additional thing, or things, depending on how you look at it:

Small and lightweight

The M2 / 3 / 4 don't particularly fit that. Though the M2 was indeed a contender. I won't deny it's a beast, it's just... ...well I won't complain about it but there are a lot of things that when added up keep me more interested in the Z4.

I’ve had 5 bmw convertibles - 2003 330, 2006 330, 2013 M3 (e93), 2022 430, and 2022 Z4M40. The best thing about the Z4 relative to other convertibles is the privacy of the cockpit and that it drives like a coupe. You don’t sense the typical downsides of convertibles - not a huge weight penalty and not drafty. The top up is very quiet also relatively to other ragtops with the hard panels inside the top and the excellent design. And as for driving, you will enjoy the experience but it’s not as nuanced and “interesting” as your M2 was. It’s more of a chill cruiser - or as some like to say, a GT. The performance mods of the handschalter will help, but I did some of those myself and it still felt like a chill car even when I pushed it hard. The engine has a lot to do with it. It’s exciting at low revs then has a linear power delivery with one step function increase in the slope at 5000 rpm. High compression ratio and a single twin scroll turbo account for this. The m2/3/4 are more ferocious the higher in the rev range and offer a more exciting experience imho. The good news is the Z4 is fun and light on its feet. When the rubber is at temperature- especially in Michelin PSS star - driving the twisties is like a throwback to older days when the M3 was light and agile and communicative. You can get to the limit and enjoy it with low risk. My vote is do it and see how you like it. Worst case scenario you drive it for a couple years and lose $20k and trade for a G8x. And having spent 10,000 miles last year in the east TN / north GA / western Carolina twisties, my advice should carry some sort of credibility. Also, last piece of advice: wear sunscreen.

I doubt this is how it's supposed to be so I'm not too concerned about it yet. We've seen enough things saying the green can only come with the manual but not vice-versa so let's just let it play out.

Seats / interior colors - did anyone else notice in the announcement that in addition to the cognac / black piping there was black / blue piping? I think I'd probably go cognac either way, have had my eye on it for like a year or more since these manual transmission rumors started, but black with blue could yet be a consideration especially for a blue paint job. Hmm.

Will be interesting to see how wheels shake out too. German configurator let me put 5 of the 6 options on the car, the 18" option pulled the manual transmission but it was letting the others fly. But it didn't mention 19 + 20" only 19". So back to the "give it time" thinking.

BMWGirlFL thanks for sharing the site info, even if we're not sure on their accuracy right now it's a lot of fun to play around!!!
There are 3 black choices here. SensaTec which I chose for the plainer seat stitching. If I didn't know it wasn't leather, I wouldn't know. Black Vernasca with contrast stitching. The third caught your eye. It's Black Alcantara & Vernasca with blue stitching & M piping.

I’m in no position or current need to rid of my 440i 6MT but please people buy this thing! This is such a rarity these days and the B58/6MT combo is oh so rewarding.

Try to find a used one to test drive.

Had an ND Miata for years that I loved. Wanted a bit of an upgrade so got a used G29 Z4 M40i that I really liked but missed the manual gearbox and bought a new G87 M2 this year.

Now this finally gets announced. Ha! Wellllll, reckon I’ll wait a few years and likely swap the M2 for a used manual Z4.

I’m not a convertible person, but bring on the Z4 coupe or shooting brake they showed!

Thank you so much! That's one reason I'm jumping on this vice ordering a new M2 right now..., the M2 will be around a while and I can get one down the road if I still want one compared to this. I'm gonna give it a whirl. Heck, I might be in a position to add the M2 later anyway without getting rid of this or my X3. Good problem to have!

The German configurator appears to be working fairly well for Z4 M40i with manual transmission.

Seems you can't select either of the aluminum interior trims, which is unfortunate.

Ditto for the 18" wheels.

The lower dash is black on the Z4 no matter what interior color you select. I do wish they would have it like you show, where it matches the interior.
