Which Oil & Filter

Getting close to the end of my break-in period and I'm going to do an oil change to get any metal shavings or anything out of the oil and I'm wondering which oil and filters everyone is using. I'm driving the s30i version. Thanks!

Thanks, but these aren't sold in the U.S.
EDIT: I found a version of Castrol.

I get my oil changed at a local BMW shop, they use Liqui Moly. I don't know what filter, though.

BMW sells official oil change kits which include the filter: https://www.getbmwparts.com/c-oil-change-kits-174

I use only oem filters.I trust them more than any aftermarket ones. They’re really not much more expensive

If it is a well-known aftermarket filter that gets great reviews I would definitely use it. However, I would still select the OEM filter as long as the price is reasonable.

Doesn't BMW offer free maintenance for the first 3 or 4 years in the US and it should be included?

I use the OEM BMW filter from FCP Euro and Castrol Edge (full synthentic) 0W-20. I’ve been using this combo for years across 7-8 BMWs of all types with no issues (different viscosities for type of car and time of year of course).

I haven't done my own oil changes for some years now, but nowadays I would be very concerned about chinese knockoff / fakes if I was ordering anything "oem" online. There is SO much of that crap that gets sold.

It's free only for the recommended oil changes. Oil change after break-in is not a recommended service.

Exactly, the Z4 is different than true M cars where they will do in the oil change after 1200 miles.

Have either used Castrol 5/30 (Euro) or Mobil 1 EP 5/30

Mobil 1 was a factory fill on a number of BMW's that I owned as is Castrol.

Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30 & Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30 have also been recommended in the past.

Seems like whoever gets a factory fill contract (low bidder?) gets recommended.

As a reference point for the OP, the owners manual recommends 0W-20 or 0W-30, API SL, SM, or SN if BMW Longlife oil isn't available but, as mentioned, even BMW service departments use oils other than BMW branded oils.
