Impact of *new* EV push for the Z4 manual
Today the administration announced a further push to eliminate gas powered new car sales by 2030.
This is only going to push manual sales further along in the short term imo, automakers are going to completely abandon (if they haven’t already) plans for specialty ICE vehicals. I fully expect record M2 sales to continue and manual Z4’s to hammer allocations until production ends. This is it, if the writing on the wall wasn’t big enough before it’s in full neon brightness now. Keep what you get your hands on. |

The sky is not falling. Even assuming the EPA rules aren’t challenged, (they will be), let alone overturned, (possibility, especially depending on politics in the next few years), compared to initial proposals a year ago versus today is night & day.
Much more of a mixture of Hybrid, PHEV, and BEVs, versus full-on BEVs. And a much longer timeframe. The sky isn’t falling, contrary to what extremists of one party stating, nor has the environment been saved either, contrary to the opposing party. And we all know manuals, (or lack thereof), have virtually nothing to do with this stuff. Not enough folks want them, hence why they’ve been on a decline, for decades, across both parties in power. https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/b...rules-b8606182 E; semi-related, we all know very little actually comes to fruition the last couple decades. What one party/admin does is eliminated upon the incoming party, rinse & repeat, this why no one ever knows if anything truly works, (be it economy, social, justice, manufacturing, etc, etc). |

Yeah, EVs rules are getting more realistic, but a long way to go yet. I suspect we will see a bigger emphasis on plug-in hybrids. I have a friend who sold his i8 because he moved to a lake front high-rise and didn't have a place to park it. I was really tempted to buy it instead of the Z4, but my wife hated it. They also don't hold their value at all. But, they are good cars. I could see a Z4 type plug-in hybrid like the i8.

From an engineering standpoint, full electric is the way to go. Right from the get go, it’s obvious that it’s impractical (today), and manufacturers are recognizing that.
While I’m not a fan of hybrids at all (buying 2 problems instead of one) it’s a good way to develop a long term reliable and safe battery system. Then, as technology allows, transition the vehicle to be more reliant on battery than ICE, ultimately eliminating the ICE. Since manufacturers are seeing the error of their ways in jumping straight to electric, it lends hope that vehicles like the Z4 still have some life left. Indeed, hybrid is used in several high performance exotics, and I think appropriate in that application.

Right now EVs are the shiny new thing but when the reality of our pathetically inadequate electric grid, the difficulty in recycling dead batteries and the related environmental impact thereof, the fact that most production of raw materials, components and the cars themselves will come from China this whole idiotic house of cards will come crashing down and ICE will continue on indefinitely.

ICE will be sentenced to death by government. One way or another, either through mandates or raising gas tax through the roof.
I recently started gathering intel on the BMW I4, if I were in the market for an electric car, that would be the one. M50 version performs incredibly well but sacrifices range. It was rated a 10/10 by Car and Driver |

‘Government’ and ‘common sense’ rarely go hand in hand - especially when a political uses the phrase ‘common sense’. It’s always political motivation, and not practical motivation.

Not a chance
Once the OEMs have invested billions in PHEV and eV powertrains ICE is never coming back. The worlds needs to get rid of all car tailpipe emissions that are causing cancer all over the place and governments around the world are aware. Charging will mature like all technologies do. Soon enough parking lots will be giant charging pads. ICE will be gone in Europe by 2035 then Japan and China and the US will follow.
Most of the carmakers are not even developing new ICE powertrains. ICE is about dead. Quote:

Agreed. I think battery powered cars were going to happen eventually anyhow, ultimately taking over, but government is speeding it up though for certain. In a decade or two today's kids will be fans of EV and wonder why it took so long. And probably hate when a gas powered car drives by. OK that could be 30 years but it's happening, and would have happened anyhow just perhaps more slowly.

I think plug in hybrids are a great way to transition away from ICE and tailpipe emissions. I have a '20 Jeep GC Trailhawk with the V8 Hemi. It gets 15 MPG which is horrible. I drove a 4Xe version of the same truck that has similar HP and it gets like 50MPGe. The first 30 miles are pure battery so no gas burned. You can buy a big rig Jeep that pulls 7500 lbs and gets almost 2X the mileage as the ICE version. Dont need any government to tell me thats a good deal. BMW makes an X5 that does this too but its $80K. The Jeep 4Xe is like $60K.
