While I haven't driven one I did sit in a G70 and G80 at the last International Auto Show here in Tampa and these were probably my favorite sedan/semiluxo/sporty cars under $100k. The two guys I was with agreed.

I personally like their design direction. Not all the flourishes are to my taste, but they are all handsome machines. Everyone is correct in that they take pieces here and there from other brands and mix it up but this isn't a bad thing. People 'expect' to see certain design styles in luxury cars and this is intentional. As for how they drive, it all depends on the model and year. The Equus/G90 is a boat. It's super quiet and everything inside is padded and damped. This carpets, motorized shades for windows etc. It's not a drivers car but has a nice V8 roar and tug. The G80 is more athletic but is not a sports car. I prefer the interior of the G80 to the 90 but the rear seat is where it's at in the 90 (I prefer smaller headrests in front to be able to see out front better but that's just me). The G70 is new, and having been unimpressed with the c class it should do well. It has a tighter rear seat than the C and 3/4 about same as the A4 but the front seat and cabin 'design' is superior in the G70. Which leather is better is up to you. None of them hold a candle to Lexus materials or finish. The lexus is just softer and quieter than all of the above (keeping within classes) with very nice plastics and leather. But Lexus doesn't make driver focused cars as a credo (every brand has one or two special models, but I'm speaking overall it's not what they're known for - the GS F happens to be right up my alley of course), just isolation chambers with a very techy appearance (without the tech behind it). Also ergonomically they are weird. Caddy's drive better than all of the above, but also ergonomically they are not to my taste and the interiors are too tight for me. That's a GM thing, people like feeling like they're in a bathtub, some sort of sense of security by having all that door next to you. I like seeing out the windows. Materials are fine if a bit plasticky), and design is more edgy than classy on the inside (outside are all beautiful). Escalade I'm leaving out since it isn't a caddy, it's a suburban in drag and drives/feels like a chevy truck. Which of course is what the people want apparently. One thing the Genesis all need some work on is little NVH things here or there. The older ones were more 'crashy' over bumps and uneven surfaces but they have all improved drastically. This may be what you are referring to. Engines were also more noisy or grainy sounding but they fixed this too. Last was steering and overall feel, and truthfully this was the only place they were lagging but in the latest generation they caught up (and this is highly subjective anyway, some people prefer the disconnected feeling as luxury, others prefer it to be tighter). I always found it too loose, like overboosted power steering back in the day. In my experiences, Audi's look the nicest but their materials choice is the thinnest and least substantial feeling (buttons/knobs) and they have the smallest feeling interiors. Mercedes looks the most polished/ornate compared to the sterile audi but the plastics are hard and leather is thin and they handle clumsy. BMW has the least 'design' in their interior, basically plain (which happens to be my preference), but the materials and actions are all smoother/higher end than the other two and they drive the nicest. Genesis splits the difference. It has more of a bentley appearance but exhibits a low end benz feel vs a high end hyundai. (whereas Audi to me feels like a very nice VW/Skoda) I drove Acura's forever, and that was because they were the best honda's you could get. Mechanically they are all (still) superior to the european brands. They never felt like anything more than an amazing honda (which is already the best everyday car brand there is), not trying to be a 'luxury car.' And you saved a ton of money this way (leasing acura's was generally cheaper than leasing honda's due to the resale). Probably also why I went BMW, they are the least 'luxury' of the luxury brands. I just wanted 'nice' like a German Honda. Genesis doesn't feel like that, it feels like a luxury car that has modern day style and tech, but feels like it's just one generation behind in build (the G90 mechanicals really aped mercedes underneath if you ever took a look). If you save lots of money this way, or just prefer the aesthetics, then go for it. But they are certainly not 'crap' or 'cheap' any more than any other 'luxury' brand in my experience anyway. Seth |

I like it. I enjoyed the G70 I test drove and my only real complaints was that the interior design and switchgear isn't very different from the regular Hyundai's. Now with the new G80 and GV80, it looks like they finally have their own design inside and out as well as switchgear that only they use. Now they need to work on the dealerships, but other than that, Genesis are really good cars, and they have some really good people on their team (such as Albert Biermann, ex head of M-division) not to mention the value and warranty is really good and reliability hopefully will be good as well.

I hate everything about it. Maybe it's all the chrome, the massive grille, that awful green color, the weird turn signal things, but IMO it looks terrible. wtf is that steering wheel too...more SUV's, less sedans please.

I think it looks to much like a copy. As for sales the problem with the high end luxury market is a large percentage buy what they always wanted or on brand (not saying it is a bad thing), but trying to get the BMW/MB owner in the Hyundai showroom (not a knock, where it is sold), is difficult. When someone says it is the "best value", likely true but like most luxury items most aren't sold on value. I doubt objectively it will be better than the top competitors so will need to go after the market looking for value.

I think they are great value for people that don't care about badge prestige. Of course you can nitpick the fact that all Hyundai's and Kia's in general have their styling cues ripped off from other automakers so while they will never win awards for originality they have stolen enough solid styling cues from Audi, BMW, etc that their vehicles for the most part appear tasteful. I agree with others that the chrome is unfortunate and I feel the interior looks a little dated in design as has been said the materials are not that bad at all and they are pretty refined. It's not my cup of tea but I feel at the very least their existence as a quality alternative at a lesser price should keep the Germans on their toes.

God I miss that car, in my eyes Infiniti was the Japanese BMW, the G, M, and FX were such excellent vehicles, shame Infiniti has really lost its edge, they don't make a single competitive vehicle now.

It's very derivative. Side profile of an Audi A7, grille of an Acura, headlight of last gen Chevy truck, taillight of a Toyota Avalon, interior of a 90's Buick. Brilliant!
