CarPlay Update

As we all know, CarPlay connectivity has been an issue with iDrive7 and iOS 12. Now after 4 months with the car and iOS 13 and 07/2019 iDrive updates I have rarely any connectivity issues caused by software glitches.

However, I regularly drop connection after about 1 hr of driving with my iPhone Xs on the wireless charger and CarPlay running with Waze, Music etc. In these instances the iPhone connection drops due to overheating (if you pick the phone up, it is hot and functionality of any kind significantly slowed down). If I place the phone off the charger, such overheating occurs only, if the phone is placed in confined space.

I use an Anker wireless charger at home with a build in vent that cools the phone while charging. Given the BMW charges is placed in this narrow cavity a cooling mechanism would be really advisable.

Currently, I have no solution for this other than keeping the phone removed from the charging mat and connect via USB when charging is required on longer distances.

Anybody have the same experience?

Same problem here. iphone overheats after 50 minutes or so, puts itself into protection mode stopping all carplay functions. It seems to be a very inefficient charger.

Do you have the lid to the charger compartment closed or open? Do you have an iPhone case?

I hadn’t experienced this with my Xs. I am wondering if the case I used reduced the charging enough for it not to get so hot as to trigger a thermal shutdown. It did get pretty warm.

I now have a 11 Pro and haven’t tried it on a longer trip yet.

Lid always open.
Just regular Apple leather case. Should have zero impact.
