Raiti's Rides Reviews '20 Z4 M40i

Made the trip down to Tampa to meet up with Joe Raiti last weekend. Gave him the keys to my car for him to review.

Love the red. Looks amazing all shined up. Just wish there wasn’t so much pollen in my area to get on it a day after washing.

Are you stationed at NAS Pensacola? Couldn't help but notice the license plate. Going to guess that you're a flight instructor on exchange to the Navy?

I'm doing Euro Delivery for my M40i then having it shipped to my dealership near Sheppard AFB - heading to ENJJPT for my next assignment!

Nah I was active duty for 5 years, stationed out of Hurlburt Field for the past 2. Now I'm active reserves (weekend warrior) for the Air Force and a contractor for the navy. Almost went pilot though, but I would have just missed the age requirement for pilot school entry (29y+1month) so would've been reclassified if I was originally selected. Was my dream job since I was 6, but I dragged my feet doing it. Oh well. Love what I do now and may get my PPL later on.

Best review of the car that I have seen. Well done Joe240 for arranging that. I take it that your car was already run-in when you allowed the reviewer to gun your car?

Just a couple of minor points. I notice that the switch to open and close the roof works the opposite way to the UK cars. And, the U.K. version of the M40i comes with Aluminium Tetragon trim on the central consul. Joe Raiti would have preferred that to the shiny black in your car.

Anyway, well done to you Joe240 for sharing this with us. Enjoy your ride and Happy motoring.

At had 2500 miles on it by the time I got down there. However I’ve been riding it hard since 150 miles. Never misses a beat. As far as the button, thought it worked the same. Push down to open, pull up to close?

I saw the tetragonal trim on the 30i at the dealership and I wasn’t a fan of it. Went gloss black because it matches everything else better (the vents stay gloss black regardless). Also, vinyl wrapping that tetragonal trim, since it’s raised, would look ugly imo. So the smooth gloss black would be the easier wrap candidate which I might do at some point (unless someone does CF trim pieces in the future).

Thanks for the well wishes. Just took the car for an hour drive down the coast with my wife, soaking up the sun. Car makes me want to drive all the time. Reason why it has so many miles already after 1.5 months (sitting at 3500 miles currently).

Also, spoke with Raiti and said he'd like to get my z4 and the new Supra on Sebring if we can coordinate it. I'd love to see how they compare on the track. The z4 handles on rails, don't see the Supra being noticeably better.

Sounds like you are loving your car Joe. Long may that continue.

The roof switch in the UK works like:-
Pull up to open the roof
Push down to close it
So it is the opposite way to your car. Don't understand that.

By the way I made a mistake, it is Tetragon trim not Tetragonal. Damn that predictive text. My excuse anyway.

Let's hope you don't have the problem that I am having with stones getting into the brakes - a living nightmare

Interesting video; thanks for posting. He made a couple mistakes; 0-60 for a NA Z40i is 3.9 seconds. https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/01/14/b...r-the-z4-m40i/ also the quarter mile time is off - though I haven't seen a real 1/4 mile test yet, the heavier and slower Jaguar F type V6S does 4.3 0-60 and the quarter in 12.9 at 107mph so there is no way the M40I will be as slow as 13.7 seconds....also the 155mph he mentioned is the electronically limited top speed, not the quarter mile trap speed. Given the 0-60 times, I'd expect the car to do the quarter in the low 12's.

cheers,
Dave

There's a silly law in the US that any window/roof switch has to pull up to close, so kids and animals can't step on a switch and get themselves stuck in the closing window.

Thanks for explaining that nullspace. Now I understand, although I don't see why they did not just make UK the same. No big deal though.

We test drove the M40i the other day. We remember to make the top open up, one pulled up on the switch and held it. To close the top, one pushed down on the switch and held it. The mind can sometimes play tricks, but we are relatively certain of that because I initially thought it worked the opposite way. On the other hand, I was hesitant to comment because it really doesn't matter. So why comment, you ask? Good dog gone question.

I could be wrong! There are other ways to comply with the law.

Congratulations on your new Z4! I'm sure you've already had some fun with it. I guess we know for sure how the switch works here in the USA. Thanks for pointing that out. Like I said, sometimes the mind plays tricks on you.

Thanks! I’m loving it so far.

And I took a picture of the manual because even after driving it and using the top several times I still couldn’t remember. My memory isn't what it used to be either. 😀
