Plus, besides the points about the cylinder size and parts sharing, what real value does a 1.6L I4 have in the lineup when they have the 1.5L I3? They've finally completed the transition away from the 1.6L N13 to the 1.5L B38, and now they want to bring in a replacement? It doesn't make sense. I'd be very surprised if this happens.

The bigger question is where is the compact 4L 91mm bore-center V8 to compete with VAG and Mercedes? Are they going to offer one or just hold onto the current 98mm bore V8 until V8s themselves are phased out in a decade or two?

They didn't have a suitable I4 ready, and they don't need special effort to make the necessary power from an I6. Next generation we should be looking at an S48. Of course, then we'll have the AWD transverse layout too, unless hell freezes over.

Can't wait for my transverse 4-cylinder AWD M2!

Oh wait, I can...

It will be the end of next year, before they decide to freeze over Hell or not.

That's one way to look at it perhaps. Optimism is commendable.

However, I think that while there may be a few desperate soles somewhere trying to freeze hell over by the end of the year, it probably isn't worth getting your hopes up too high that they will succeed.

TT RS, Evo, CLA45, Golf R - these are some great cars. All of them are transverse turbocharged I4 (or I5, maybe, one more time) with AWD. At some point there aren't enough people willing to pay for the lower margin RWD car in this class to justify the cost anymore.

Plan to buy M135i LCI but seems there will be M140i

Hi Gentlemen,

Currently I own an E60 525i and it is really an iconic BMW 5 series with modern exterior design, good handling and comfortability. To further own an M car is always one of my dream.

In Taiwan, a brand new M3 cost nearly USD160k (yeah this is true) thus I turn to M135i LCI (USD80k). But after browsing the website, I found the expert here talking about there would be M140i in 2H16 and which makes me wonder if I should buy M135i LCI with N55 or M140i with B58? Anyone can give me some advices? Since I have kid already, I would not consider coupe car such as M2. Thank you.

Any word regarding the 340i being offered in the F31 sports wagon in 2016 or 2017 in the USA?

The last word about the F31 in the USA by SCOTT26 was that not only will we not be getting the 340i version of it, but the F31 in *any* form will no longer be imported here.

I didn't do a proper search prior to post. Anyway a 5kw gain is an underacheivement IMO. I am really impressed by B47's and B57's power figures. Any rumors about the F30-31 getting these engines in North America?

At the moment, it appears that the current diesel is here to stay till the end of the model run.

From what I'm hearing, the main advantage of B48 vs N2x is more refined behavior.

SOP data was open to me for a relatively short period of time. I can't see it since last fall.

They should have a high performance 2.0 I4 Turbo in late stage development for the new DTM regs in 2016. A detuned S version of that would have made a much more interesting choice than the N55 in the M2.

M140i/M240i will add ~15hp compared to the B58 output in non-M-performance cars, similar to what M135i offered above regular x35i models.

Expect Wifi hotspots to become an option in MY2017 1/2/3/4 series cars.
