1200-Miles Service/Oil Change?

Wasting time on YT watching PCD videos, and came across this one:

It seems that M cars require a 1200-miles services to change out the break-in engine oil and diff fluid/oil. I've been looking in the PDF owner's manual for the Z4, but it refers to a maintenance booklet which is not linked/available electronically. Anyhow. Since the Z4 isn't an M car, I guess the 1200-miles services is not required. If I take it to the dealer and ask them to change the oil, will they take the job or should I go to an independent shop for that?

I would presume they "would accept the job" but it'll be at your own cost rather than being a true M vehicle required and included 1,200 mile service.

It's not yet available for the '24 or '25 but should be the same as the '23.

My dealer charges they same $99 for the oil change in my M240 regardless of CBS or not. That’s only slightly more than most places, so I just have them do it.

Dealer will do it as part of 1st free maintenance , only have dealer do it because of warranty purposes

Is that at the 12 month mark? I suppose then we get 3 free oil changes, basically. I'll probably put 3k miles a year on it if that, to be honest, so this could be fine.

I won't drive it much in winter (only if it's cold but clear, no snow or salt). In the summer I actually bike to work a few times a week. And work is close when I do drive, maybe 5 miles - I will often take a super long route to work to be sure I fully warm my cars up.

Sorry i forgot new BMW's includes maintenance for 3 yrs, i would take it in at 1200 miles irrespective of time and have them change oil as part of maintenance schedule and dont think dealer will refuse. I always had a M car which required break-in do need to see how this works really

Anyone done this service on their new Z4 yet instead of taking to dealer, i would like to do it myself

Found some good DIY videos for Supra B58 engines, it says 6.5L/ 6.9 Quartz, can i folow the same video for the Z4 with the oil type as recommended by BMW , which oil filter to use?

I'd just buy the OEM one.

Filter Element: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-mann-par...428583898~man/

Part number is listed as 11428583898.

As for which brand to use, I'm partial to Amsoil.

I'd shop a place like FCP Euro, or even a BMW dealer with a decent online shop, and get all OEM stuff. That's my plan anyhow. "Just in case" some issue arises while I still have low miles, some engine issue that hasn't shown up yet. Doubt it exists but if it does at least I can show a receipt for all OEM products.

I'm planning to do a few things at about 1,000 miles as well, or this fall (before it gets cold), whichever comes first. Will have to remember to check if the dealer would do the oil change for me, for free. I'll DIY if not. I can handle the rear diff fluid swap as well, no chance they'll cover it and doubt I'd pay their labor rates.

I asked the dealer to preform the 1,200 mile service and cheerfully paid for it. Breaking the car in correctly is important if you’re planning on keeping it.

Bear in mind the diff oil change procedure is a little different on The Z4 M40i and slightly more labor intensive than on an actual M car.

I don’t even plan on waiting for the 1yr intervals for engine oil. I’ll just have mine changed every six months even if I’m paying for every other oil change. I don’t mind cause I’ll be keeping this car for well over the next ten years.

How much did you pay? Did you change diff oil too?

Can you please tell me what brand of oil and qty they put in your car from the invoice?

All the dealers around here offer "BMW Value Service" oil changes at $99.99 for 4 and 6 cyl engines. ($129.99 for V8s and $179.99 for diesels and M cars.)

I'm working on BMWs number 19 and 20. I've never serviced the diff before 75k miles. No issues. I sold my E60 at 175k miles, it was serviced twice.

Oil is BMW TwinPower Turbo 0W-20, 83-21-5-A2A-FC5. While in warranty it is important to use oil that meets BMW LL17FE+ spec. Once you're out of warranty, most of the experts recommend using a BMW LL01 spec oil, 5W-30. The newer BMW specs are geared towards fuel economy (hence the "FE" in the spec).

BMW's current oil partner is BP/Castrol. The BMW equivalent is Castrol EDGE Euro Car 0W-20 and is available at Walmart.

The car holds about 6 liters. The best practice is to fill with 6 quarts, then start the car and measure the oil level. Add just enough to bring it to full (the "Low to Full" display is 1 quart.) Don't overfill.

Thanks for the details , yes i can buy that BMW oil and do it myself but the question is what oil is in that BMW can because BMW does not make their own oil, they must be using some other manufacturers oil

My dealer quoted me $180 and said the early oil change is not recommended at 1200 miles on non-m cars, and that I should wait at least until 5k miles.

I do plan on doing at at 1200 miles. If anyone found a dealer in the DC/VA/MD area that is good on pricing, please let me know. This was BMW Rockville that I am in touch with BTW.
