I look like a meme when I wear them.

I need to investigate. My last good pair of prescription sunglasses was Maui Jim's. I got a good 5 years worth of use out of them but my prescription has changed enough that I really need a new pair. At $900+ these days for prescription glasses, it won't be Maui Jim. Back before I needed prescriptions, Serengeti was my go to.

Nice tip on the Croakies too. I have a couple of hats that I really don't want to lose.

Sadly I'm getting a little "thin on top" so without a beanie in the winter to keep the head and ears warm or a cap in the summer to stop second degree burns . . . . it's all about self protection

This subject has gotten a little off topic with all of the sunglass banter but one important point that I would like to make is regarding the online reviews when you search for the “best sunglasses for driving”. The vast majority of the reviews always list polarized lenses and strongly recommend them. I even saw one from Road and Track that was written in 2021 where they listed a few non polarized sunglasses but the ones that were polarized were strongly recommended.

It’s because they cut down glare. Just get your windshield tinted - problem solved. They push marketing of the more expensive sunglasses.

Many of these online reviews push the more expensive sunglasses, there are a few that don't and they all earn revenue through the clicks on the links to the actual seller.

As you know tinting of the front windshield is illegal in many states and I would only tint my side and rear windows. If you scroll back in this thread and you will see the comments about how polarized sunglasses interfere with the HUD which many of us have in our BMW's. One would think that the reviewer at Road and Track would have been aware of this fact when the review was written.

Yes, I've been fully engaged in this discussion - and aware of the illegal nature of tinting. However, you can get 90% or even 100% visibility ceramic tinting that still cuts out the glare and the UV and to some degree the heat. That combined with the non-polarized sunglasses should give you a decent view of the HUD + cut down on the glare. Expensive solution and not one I want on the roadster, but we do this on our other cars.

As far as hats, I've never been a fan, 4 year ago I suffered a sever bout of alopecia and lost almost every hair on my body, I wore hats occasionally but usually just slathered spf 50 on my head and let the wind blow over my bald scalp (not as good a feeling as the wind blowing through your hair though )

Windshield tint is illegal in New York and while tinting cuts down on the intensity of the brightness it does nothing for glare, polarized lenses are far superior especially if you are into boating, the glare off the water can be intense and is all but eliminated with polarized lenses, the only down side of polarized lenses is that they also make the heads up display invisible.

yeah Polarized glasses help in the rain too... helps to reduce the amount of "haze" making more of the road visible.

If you are an old codger (like myself) a flat cap works best. Uphill both ways, too.

Try Warby Parker. I’ve been using them for sunglasses for years.

FYI, you are going to sweat even more when you get behind the wheel of your new M40i and put it in Sport Plus mode! 😎

I will say I was surprised at how warm even the 30i felt. Well the good news is that extra warmth will be comforting during the fall and winter. Speaking of which... can't wait for fall and winter hahaha

Whitman Textiles terry cloth bucket hat, while not entirely attractive, is very functional and remains in place through triple digits. Will avoid posting the diaper on my head pic, but really works in TX temps and speeds.

One thing I don't like to do is wear BMW stuff in the BMW's. Maybe a weird thing so I wear my BMW performance driving school hat in the Cobra & a Cobra hat in the BMW's.

Lots of other baseball hats in the mix but leave the main two in the cars.

LOL I can see that... sometimes it can feel like you're being a little pretentious. I just grab the first hat I see. Just so happens that my BMW hats out number my others. lol

Don’t forget the tops of your thighs. Been an outdoor boy my whole life with golf, swimming and convertibles and it looks like the sun exposure is coming home. Having a carcinoma cut out of my upper thigh next week. Very small and the best type of skin cancer to get if you’ve got to get any. I wear a hat whenever the top goes down but I’ve neglected sun screen on my legs. Going to be better going forward even though I hate putting on sunscreen!.

Speaking about BMW stuff, I asked my salesman for a free white BMW T-shirt with the big logo and told him he would get referrals because people would stop me when I was wearing it.

The truth of the matter is I like to wear white T-shirts while driving with the top down during the day as they are cooler and more comfortable to wear than a dark top.
