I'm wondering as well. Curious to know if this will be available software update on models with HUD?
My guess is that it will trickle down to all the GXX cars but feature set will be more limited as it trickles down to the 5/3/maybe 2 &1

I thought HUDs were stupid until I got mine with one and now I can't live without it.

Fun fact the HUD on the Range Rover sport sucks more than Kim Kardashian

It's a garbage kit. Doesn't even integrate with OEM navi and it's not really even a HUD, just a small see thru info screen if I recall correctly.

It's not something I would actively add to a BMW if I was purchasing one but drove a 4er Gran Coupe with it and I was amazed on how clear and unobtrusive it was. It was there but you never notice it in a way where you would be distractive to the driver. With the addition of the 12" HUD, BMW's HUD is even better based on the video. I don't know Audi's and Mercedes offering and how good they are but stuff like what we see in the video is why BMW generally leads in car tech.

The HUD has so much potential that's why audis gauges don't really make me oooh and awe

Awesome technology,

Now you can look at the radar on the HUD to know how close is the car in front!

That is what I meant

Of course the HUD technology is constantly developing so maybe it is not far fetched to expect the traditional speedo en RPM meters will fade away in future cars and HUD will be the only way.

I`m a little ambivalent I must say, I do like the traditional dash lay out, but I do also like HUD technology.

This is a good sign, but you all must know that the things being explored and prototyped by many manufacturers now are such things as windowless cars right? Of course there are safety concerns and the question of redundancy if something goes wrong, but the separate technologies currently exist. It just needs to be integrated, and optimized.

Also the future will have a 3D projection of the navigation path above your view. Like a floating streetlight or tube that is overlaid for augmented reality.

What you are seeing in this video is older technology that his finally commercialized.

Somewhat off topic, but I agree, bmw Nav is atrocious. Why can't they just switch to google maps...

One point of criticism if I may;

I would like the focus of the HUD further away. While driving and looking far in front of the car, you,ll have to refocus to see the HUD clearly.

For safety reasons it would be advisable to make the HUD (if possible) and it`s focus speed dependable.
Don't worry. Auto HUD focus will come when they put cabin/driver facing cameras in the cars. Eyeball tracking technology is progressing towards this and is needed to detect driver attentiveness. Also, eyeball tracking is used in VR and AR headsets.

So imagine the future where the whole dash, or driver info ( why limit HUD to only 12" ) is floating and where ever you look as long as you look through glass. There are technologies that exist that can do this which are not visible to the passengers. I think the technologies need to be further developed and the price point must drop before something like that can be commercialized.

Anyway, depending on the design, the information can be floating or fixed, but it is based off of your head and eyeball positions. It will overlay information to create an augmented reality for you. Similar to the concept of google glass, but for your car.

This looks like it's really focused on navigation while I prefer my HUD to have instrument gauge/music info. I have the CIC HUD now and it's nice but id like an upgrade. Last summer I drove a Stingray at my local track and it's HUD was all instrument gauges. Speed in center RPM surrounding the speed and even converging shift lights on the HUD above the Digital tach. I hope BMW makes versions like the Corvette performance oriented HUD for the new M models as they come out.

I'd love to see, with a toggle switch (BC button?):

- outside temp and
- clock/date

And also a blind spot alert in addition to the faint amber light in the side mirrors that are not noticeable with a setting sun behind you.

I love what it already offers and above would make it perfect for my wants.

The focal plane for the HUD is tied to the front end of the car. This, presumably, prevents you from looking past pedestrians.

Wow. there's nothing BMWs doing that is innovative compared General Motors HUDs. RPM? Gear selection? Customization?

Technically, you should be constantly refocusing anyway, looking near and far at all times.
This. The BMW UI engineers know what they're doing.
