Stuttgart: MB Museum or even better: Porsche Museum ... old cute German cities nearby ... have some German dishes ... take some roaded through the countryside ... 550 km on the Highway might sound nice but could be boring if there is too much traffic ...
This.

And if you can get a tour, do the AMG factory. By far the best tour I've ever been on. When we went my buddy got to meet the guy that built 2 of his engines. Pretty damn cool.

The Welt is awesome when your picking up a car on ED. Otherwise it is just a giant showroom. One other positive is BMW on demand. I wouldn't "blast" all the way to the ring without stopping along the way. There is so much cool stuff and places to visit along the way.

Love Rothenburg OBT. Been there 3 times. Wouldn't miss it. Whaling on the autobahn is fun but does eventually get boring. The "romantic" road is worth a cruise if even for a short stint.

Have fun

Lived in Germany for 4 years - went to Rothenburg about 30 times. It never got old. I love that place.

About the same as the rest of the thread. It took me 6 hours to get up there at autobahn pace.

I understand the need to knock it off of your bucket list. But like others have said, there is so much that I discovered out there to enjoy even more.

If you are going out there for Euro Delivery I would definitely check out the threads and write ups of other's experiences. Rothenburg OTB was great, The BMW museum and factory tour was worthwhile along with some of the Romantic Road/Highway and some castles.

On a weekday ? Or weekend ???

Most trucks are not allowed to drive on the Autobahn from 2200 Saturday until 2200 Sunday. So its easier to drive then. 98% of the trucks I should say. Only trucks with medical or food have special permission to drive on the weekends. All trucks, have an 80 kph speed limit on the Autobahn. And sometimes this makes for some elephant racing(two trucks trying to pass) on a two lane Autobahn - which most of the Autobahns are. Just FYI.

It takes about five and half hours - if you don't run into any traffic or "stau's"(stopped traffic!) jams.

Running into a Stau could mean a +30 min traffic jam or even hours long. It just depends on how bad of an accident is up ahead. Plus you will need to stop for fuel once, each way. 560 kms(345 miles). Physically and mentally you will exhausted after a drive like this. Don't even think of driving the Ring after a drive like this. Stay over night somewhere, and enjoy Germany.

IF you are driving during the week... I would drive like this... driving from Munich to the 'Ring.

Autobahn A8 to A65 to A1...

Normally I'd drive this route... but traffic can be bad around Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Bad Kreuznach. Stuttgart is known as "Staugart" bc there is always so much traffic(and speed cameras!).

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/muni...5!2d50.3340981

Fuel prices are around 1.60 per liter for SuperPlus(premium grade) or almost $7 per gallon when you do the conversion.

Normally I tell people when on ED to limit their driving to about 250 kms per day. The amount of concentration to drive quickly on the Autobahn can be taxing to the "first timers". Take your time and enjoy Germany.

IF you decide to visit "Rothenburg ob der Tauber"(a beautiful old city!) I would drive the A8 out of Munich, to the A7 and then the A7 to the A3(Wurzburg) and take the A3 thru Frankfurt and then the A48 to the A61.

https://www.google.de/maps/dir/BMW+W...0981!3e0?hl=en

Traffic will always be a problem around Aschaffenburg, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden areas. But not as bad as in the Stuttgart area.

Checkout the links in my signature for more ideas on what to do while in Germany. Lots of nice places in and around Munich and plenty of car museums all over Germany. Porsche and the MB museums are must see's.

Good Luck,
Dackel

PS: You do know that the 'Ring is not open for TF(tourist fahrten) on every evening. You should check the 'Ring's TF calendar...
