2020 the year to buy?
I have started looking for a used Z4 to buy, my understanding is the 20 models are the only models that allow for flash tuning and still have to be unlocked? Has anybody cracked these on newer cars? My wife has a X3M40i and it is a 19 so the DME can be tuned.
I actually have found quite a few 20's but want to make sure before I buy anything. |

I just bought a 2020 and what I was told was that the dme still has to be unlocked but that the unlock procedure can be done by the right local tuner.
Dinan only offers this: DME UNLOCK & FLASH NOTICE / HOW TO PURCHASE 2020 MY and prior (specifically up to a 06/2020 build date) B58(O1) DME's must be unlocked and bench flashed by Dinan. 2021 MY vehicles are not supported at this time. While dealer / retail unlock and flashing tools are in development and will be available in the future, at present, two options are available: OPTION 1: Visit a Dinan Dealer and purchase the Dinan Flash Software . They will remove and mail the DME to Dinan. We'll unlock the DME, flash the software and ship it back. They'll reinstall the DME. OPTION 2: Purchase the tune. Send us your DME. We’ll unlock it, install Dinan software, and ship it back. The unlock process is free. Ground shipping to the continental USA is free. Follow the steps below if this is the course you wish to pursue. That said, if you don't want max power you can avoid an unlock with this or similar products: https://www.dinancars.com/products/s...arts/D440-0047

Can't comment on the computer issue but there have been no real changes to the Z4 until the 2023 LCI and even then they are exceedingly minor. Other than a few options that disappeared mid-covid, I'd say any year is just as good as any other.
I bought my 2020 in May of 2019 so it must have the earlier ECU... 2 cents Dave |

Certain prices went down for the 2023 model like the ACC.

"everything made after march 2020 comes with the locked ecu i believe."
I spoke with MHD and they said "if the Z4 is made after 06/2020 then a special unlock is required > DME has to be sent to a company called FEMTO in Finland" For cars prior they said, "then you just need a normal unlock from a local tuner." So all years are locked, just different levels of locking.
