BMW better have some serious incentives by the time I'm ready to buy, or my next car will have a crossed flags on its nose. It's been a long time since I've felt as excited about a car I could afford. Your move BMW.

It's simply impossible for BMW to compete in this performance category now price for price. They'd probably charge $130k for this thing.

I agree. The numbers are important, not how it is achieved.

@The Hack - great post, very thoughtful and informative.

The Hack usually has informative posts and honest perspective. His post was going good, but then he kinda lost me on the chassis (over)weight position. GM made it too heavy because they cater to 68 year-old's perceived ingress and egress difficulties?

the car looks good and has good spec but nobody knows what the reliability is. As a brand new model that is a very high risk in my mind until somebody puts 50-60k mi on it. As an example consider Alfa qf

You beat me to it. The NSX is going to go up in value the vette will depreciate as they will be selling like hot cakes. Be patient, let the hysteria wear off and let GM sort out any first run bugs and warranty issues and save a few bucks before you make your move.

How so? Looking from a position of hindsight, I'd say the C3, C4 & C5 maybe.
C6 and C7 became really great sports cars.
C1 and C2, were stunning pieces of rolling art.

The C8 is really pushing the hype right now since we haven't seen any real reviews, driving tests or rolling examples yet, and yes going mid engine a huge departure and in some respects it doesn't look like a vette I'd still say this thing if fresh and will continue to look fresh for a long time to come.

Wow look sweet. Sucks no manual though. Guess C7 might be a great choice as a toy car and will be much more cheaper.

[QUOTE=Viffermike;25068755]And to enable hybridization. I'm willing to bet that's the biggest reason the switch was made. Long-term niche viability in a changing automotive landscape. Chevy already pretty much has the American-made two (or two-plus-two) seater market to itself. That market won't become marginalized until the majority of Baby Boomers die off, and that's at least 10-15 years away.

Easy does it eh.

[QUOTE=The HACK;25063891]I'm going to do my best to offer you all my typical long winded, but somewhat honest perspective on things because, well, I own both a BMW and a Corvette right now.

Which makes my third point. One of the reasons the C8 is so heavy compared to most of its competitors, which it is...At 3,600 lbs sans driver, it's in the M4 range and it doesn't even offer a back seat. It's because of the demographic demands. It's sold, still, primarily to OLD PEOPLE. Old people that doesn't want to have to climb over a huge threshold that keeps a chassis stiff. Old people that doesn't want a stiff ride as they cruise in their mid engine supercar on a Sunday afternoon. Old people that insist they must have trunk space to carry 2 sets of golf clubs as they trek on their retired asses to a golf course on a Tuesday afternoon. Old people that wants their friend in a Porsche to know that they can beat them on a stop light, but never actually do so. With that in mind, you can sort of understand why GM engineered the C8 the way they did.

Which is a good segue to why, despite it being an aspirational brand (yes Corvette is a brand. Try and find an exterior bow-tie logo on the car independent of the actual Corvette logo. You can't), the demographic continue to get older and older. That's right, a recent poll on Corvette Forum revealed that the AVERAGE owner's age for the latest generation, the C7, is approximately 68 years old. Sixty. Eight. Yes. Past retirement. For a large percentage of owners, this is going to be the last car they buy, and that presents a huge problem for Chevy as, while there are plenty of repeat buyers, most of these repeat buys are at the end of their purchasing life. So the move to mid engine really isn't about performance, in which case they would have found ways to make it lighter, coupled with a high revving V8, and gear set that don't lock you out of 2-3 gears to meet EPA mandates. No, the move to mid-engine is to save the Corvette brand, as they know they can no longer attract younger, affluent buyers without some fundamental changes, since the C7, despite its radical redesign for bother exterior and interior, and its supercar beating numbers, continue to only attract OLDER buyers (myself included. Midlife crisis hit me HARD).

Jesus H. Christ man, don't beat around the bush.....what are you trying to say?

You think fluids are going to add nearly 250lbs to the weight of the car?

Isn't the published dry weight 3366.

So, you took that sentence from an article I attached to my post. But just some quick math. I can't find how much gas the C8 carries, but lets assume 20 gallons based on C7 specs, that's about 130lbs. 7.5 Quarts of oil is about 14 lbs. Then their is transmission oil, probably about the same or more given the transaxle, engine coolant likely more than the average 3 gallons, brake fluid, washer fluid and then all of the other lubes.....I'm going to say the 250lbs likely isn't far off.

Here's an interesting article on how vehicle weights are determined, and just for fun there's a picture of a BMW Z4 in it.

This! Everyone that can afford one, will have one. The streets will be over run with these. Case in point - see the guy in the Hawaiian shirt and the guy with the "wife-beater"/tank top in the first pic. This is the classification of individuals you will now be associated with. Beautiful car and "spec"tacular....but when everyone can have one, everyone will have one. Good on GM for being able to pull this off, but releasing cars like this, at an affordable price point, is going to hurt the market overall I think.

I've seen too many drug/kingpin type movies to know that when you release an amazing product at a cheap price point, you end up with a target on your back. I don't foresee this lasting very long. There will either be catastrophic issues....or....I don't know, maybe I'm wrong and this will become the new standard. In my opinion, the safe bet is sit back, take notes and see how this plays out before jumping in.
