License plate

A new model, people in the US buying or taking delivery soon. Yep, time for the obligatory what are you doing for the front license plate - thread.

Personally, I may start a go fund me to petition Illinois to stop requiring a front license plate on 2 seaters. Since we already have to have this stupid relflector next to front wheel arches.

Anywhere it's not required, they're so lucky. The sister car Toyota Supra doesn't even look like it's got a space for it either!

For states that require the front plate you have 3 options:

1. Run with no front plate and risk a ticket.
2. Use a tow hook mount like US Mill Works.
3. Use the OEM bracket and drill into your bumper.

I'm very happy with the U.S. Millworks bracket on my MINI S Roadster. It is a premium product with a very sturdy metal back plate. My only suggestion for improvement would be to encourage U.S. Millworks users to also use your favorite metal license plate frame to cover the exposed license plate edge and protect it from car washes pads from catching an edge and bending your license plate.

I'll sign that petition CeEL. Of course, it's Illinois so it'll be totally ignored. I took Option 1 on my 435i since ~2016...knock on wood

Here in So Cal most of us take Option 1 and we find a new best friend who is a police officer and have him just sign off the citation for us without having to mount a front bracket and plate.

When living in Illinois, I would keep the front plate under my seat. If I was being pulled over, I would grab the plate and place it on top of the dash. One time when the officer walked up to the car, he turned around, returned to his cruiser, and never said a word.

The dealer asked me and showed me how they would install it. They said in their experience talking with customers, the suburbs were ‘fine’, but the city of Chicago would fine like crazy. Especially parked cars are (supposedly) often targeted. Once I saw how they installed, it I just agreed to it.

It disturbs me less than I thought it would (just like the cerium grey trim pieces).

If you live in Texas, front plates may not be an issue very soon! There's a bill making its way through the state legislature that will lift the requirement on front plates, if it passes. It's slated to take effect on 1 September 2019. Here's the link to track its progress: https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup...86R&Bill=SB805

Probably off topic, but since it just happened to me: if you drive for Uber, please please please use a front license plate. Took an Uber in another state and really hated having to go around cars too look at the back to find my driver...

Thats why i just hop in. If theyre the uber driver then everything is cool, if not, its carjacking. Either way, it makes fond memories.
