Pretty interesting stuff about air suspension with hydraulic active anti-roll bars. Why did they go with hydraulic, not electric system. By now most manufactures switched to electric anti-rolls, very strange especially for electric car...
Anyway hard to justify the price for Rivian R1T. The Cybertruck got better specs, technology, battery and infrastructure for less money (let's hope)...

the cyber truck is going to be a similar price for similarly spec'ed out vehicle.

Top spec'd Cybertruck will have extra 100 miles range, double the payload, 14,000 towing vs 11,000 and be slightly faster. Plus it's a much larger truck with 6 seats and 6.5' bed (Rivian is only 4.5' bed and 5 seats). So it's not exactly similarly spec'd, but I'm highly skeptical about CT's price.

To each is own... I love the way it looks. 30x cold-rolled steel is ultra hard and extremely tough to work with, so simple shape makes a lot of sense. Plus it looks unique not like anything else on the road, I'm tired of "same sausage different sizes" designs those days.

Very likely a 70% or more reduction in range on difficult trails. TFL saw a 65% reduction in range when towing with a Tesla, and from my own experiences offroading, I get significantly worse MPG crawling than I do towing. I get around 2-3 MPG crawling, 10 MPG towing, and 18ish unladen highway with a 100 Series Land Cruiser.

Motortrend: We Drive the 2022 Rivian R1T Off-Road Across the Trans-America Trail, Part 1

The article doesn't go into offroad range (yet) but does show that the R1T has some offroad chops. Hopefully a subsequent article will cover the battery use / range reduction on difficult trails.

I saw four of them today in Breckenridge. Most manufactures test here for the high altitude. Reviewers have been floored by the Rivian. They are going to own this segment.

Part 2 of the Motortrend R1T Offroad Challenge

I wish they went into more specific about battery use / range reduction offroad, but there is one reassuring quote:

Quote:
It's easy to focus on anxieties like charging or range, but during 43 days of hard off-road driving through rural America we didn't run out of power once. Nor did we have any issue finding chargers for our Rivian R1Ts. The largest pain points were the occasionally unreliable Electrify America fast chargers.

It will become real when you see ordinary people driving them and parked in driveways.

When customers take delivery then it's for real. They should do an event like Tesla delivering the first trucks directly to customers via livestream.

Rivian is said to be working on their own Tesla-like supercharger network, over 3500 chargers by 2023. Also working on a level 2 network at off road destinations and state parks, over 10,000 chargers.

I saw a few testing in Breckenridge a month ago. I have never seen a car with so much praise. Reviewers are gushing about the Rivian.
