I'm still a newbie to BMW, but yes this was news to me.

I was actually looking for ideas on where to store my Glock 42. Fits perfectly, with my additional magazine. I don't think you could fit anything much larger in there though.

Only room for sunglasses. Mr. H&K is very claustrophobic in this car . . . would think the two cousins would get along better. An auto-locking glove compartment would be nice, or better yet, Polizei armrest compartment storage . . . or just get rid of all the wasted center console space, and the dang cup holders . . .dangit, thanks for reminding me of these things. . .now bordering on this should be in the minor complaints / annoyances thread.

I was scrolling through some of older threads in this forum and discovered this one. I also was clueless about the driver's side glove box and found it inside my Z4 this morning. The funny thing is that I always assumed that there was a fuse box behind the little door and never opened it. My sunglass case which I used to place in the door pocket fits perfectly inside and there is a little room left for something else.

After locating the glove box in my Z4 I went to my wife's 228i and it also has one. She is also a happy camper!

Headed to the garage and lo and behold there it was. I had never noticed it as it's pretty well (totally) concealed from the driver's seat. My wallet fits perfectly in it and there is no chance of it falling out of the car. Never heard mention of it in any of the internet reviews though I'll listen more closely if I watch any of them again.

Anyway, am I the last owner to learn about this? Come on, I'm pretty sure at least one other owner didn't know about it as they mentioned using the weak-ass door storage for their wallet. Unless they carry a massive billfold I'm sure the driver's glove box would be a better place for something as important as a wallet.

I feel like an idiot because I had seen this small glove box in my wife's 228i since we took delivery the beginning of the year and never once opened it and when I took delivery of my Z4 the beginning of September I ignored it again!

Well, it looks like you have corrected that mistake.

Hopefully none of us will be eating something perishable in the car and without thinking place the food into this small glove box and it stays in the car overnight or longer!

I store my sunglasses in the door pocket. In their case they slide nicely into the recessed area of the door pocket where I can grab them when needed.

The "secret" compartment holds my National Parks Senior Pass at the ready and my wallet whenever I'm driving.

This little compartment is great for my garage door opener. (Yes i'm aware my rear view mirror also can do this function but when I got my car I knew I was moving out and now i'm in a temporary apartment and don't feel like configuring it)

Interesting my 2019 440i does not have one. Maybe it has to do with it having the full leather package with some of the lower dash in the interior color.

My 435i has a panel over the place where the cubby would be with one switch in it. I think it is lane assist or lane keeping. Its the one that yells at you if you cross a lane without using you turn single. (its turned off in my car.)

Auto start/stop

Discovered a weird little AI feature in the auto start stop yesterday (which I can't permanently turn off now because of the last software update).

When one stops at a light behind other cars, the engine turns off. So far, that seems standard. But get this, when the light turns green and the car in front of you moves off, the engine starts up again without the driver doing anything.

Now that you mention it, that explains a few things. It has been intermittent for me though.

Very clever little vehicles.
