Brake assist recall
I just saw this article for a BMW brake assist recall that included 2019-2021 Z4s. I entered my VIN on NHTSA.GOV and it didn’t show any recalls, so I may have dodged a bullet.

Not cool, software issue could cash a crash due to brakes failing.
Thanks for the info. I assume we'll be receiving a letter soon from BMW N.A. on this. (My VIN didn't show.) |

“The specific engine start conditions consist of either 1) pressing the engine start/stop button two times in rapid succession, or 2) depressing the brake pedal very briefly while pressing the engine start/stop button. This could result in a loss of brake assist. However, prior to a loss of brake assist, the full brake assist function is available for approximately two or three full brake applications, or approximately six partial brake applications. Fully mechanical braking (without assist) is not affected, and remains available.” It sounds easy enough to avoid until they do the update and fortunately you lose brake assist, not the brakes. Having worked in software development and given the complexity of the system, this seems like a corner case that was missed in testing. |

I noticed that my service appointment was updated to include a recall for the seatbelt tensioner on the passenger side. Apparently, it may not work correctly in a moderate collision when a car seat is installed.
Hmmm, think I'll avoid running into something and taking a toddler along as a passenger. Done! |

From my previous experience with a corvette and a Chrysler 300M, at least in Europe, dealers will not tell you anything unless its a very dangerous problem.
I had to go to the dealer and let them know that there was a recall in the US, for them to fix it, which they did. If I was you, I'll go to the dealer and inquire. And maybe send them an email, to get a reply as a proof, just in case.

If your VIN did not show up, wait for a letter in October from BMW when they start notifying owners.

Received a recall notice on our 2021 M40 Z4 regarding the brake issue. Service says firmware update could take up to 8 hrs. To me this seems ridiculous, has anyone had this done and do you have an idea of the time involved?
Thanks, Steve |

My understanding is likely less but stores can't predict with certainty in advance because they don't know what other updates might be sent and system issues are not uncommon. Mine was done but with other work and my express request to not rush anything so I can't say how much time was recall related.
