On the other hand, I'm a bit surprised this is the X1M and not the X2M, which is supposed to be the sportier version (and a X2 M35i exists already), but maybe that is either due to market constraints (the X1 is available in more/more important markets?) or we'll see a X2M as well before soon.

Honda civic type R is FWD and many professionals agree that it is one of the best handling cars ever made. Same for Focus ST and Megane RS.

The new BMW 1-series is made on the same FWD platform as the X1 and many reviewrs say it handles better than the old, RWD one.

Modern differentials and technolopgies make it pretty possible for FWD cars to be on par with the RWD ones.

You can't put either of those engines in a FWD chassis. Period. Can't happen.

I have experience with 3 different 1-series (e8x, f20 and the new fwd model, both at/mt diesel/petrol) and I can tell that fwd is complete shit compared to older models.

What's with all the X1 hate? Had X3s with manuals for almost 10 years; shifted to Mini Countryman when BMW pulled the manuals from Xs. So now that they've also pulled manuals from the Countryman and I have to drive automatic, I've gone back to an X1 and frankly I don't miss all of the Mini's quirks.

How is the Golf a competitor to the X1?

I did drive the VW Tiguan and it felt much cheaper inside than the X1, while the price was almost the same.

Yes that is an X1M. To accompany the X1 xDriveM35i.

With everyone distracted by The IAA mobility. Super sleuth Wilco Blok caught these on the move. I reached out and the car they were "seriously considering" has moved forward to production status.

It makes sense when compact performance SUVs are popular with the GLA 45 AMG and Audi RSQ3 and Sportback models and the VW T-Roc R. Makes perfect sense for the X1M to join in the fun.

Engine still should be a four cylinder turbo mated to AWD BMW xDrive.

No specifics yet but that should filter in the next few days but expect close to or around 400PS? Competition model?

The fact this makes it through "the BMW market research vetting process" and they can't give us a G81 M3 Touring in the US is an absolute travesty.

I'm not hating on this car, I'm hating on the selection process for new models…
If DraftKings had a line on it; I'd bet the X1M would outsell (number of units) the M3 Touring in the US.

"UPDATE: New information from a very official source tells us that the BMW X1 test mule we saw was, in fact, a BMW X1 M35i, an M Performance car and not a full-on M Division product. As for the quad pipes, M Performance models will be getting quad exhausts moving forward. "

The main point is that the base X1 is offerered in the US, and the base G21 (3er Touring) is not, so BMW would have to do all the homologation/paperwork/US-specific changes necessary for a few G81 - resulting in astronomical numbers per unit.

Blasphemous for an M division product to go the FWD route.

Just because other automakers want to sell out their performance divisions doesn't make it alright for BMW to do so. I'm not here to cheerlead for CEOs to make higher profits, I'm a car enthusiast, I could care less what makes sense for the company's balance sheets.

This is was my prediction. A lot of the M-Performance cars have been receiving M content. Just look at the X3 M40i. Has Twin-M Grill Slats, M Mirrors, and even a huge M badge (with no numbers) in the grills. I guess quad pipes is next. So much for differentiating the M cars and M-Performance vehicles…

The small CUV are just a slightly raised up car using the same chassis. The only real difference is the image.

Gets kinda blurry if BMW offered an X1M, which would probably be lower than a regular X1. At what point does a hopped up CUV just become the car version?

If you stand under an X1 and a 2GC on a hoist, it is very hard to tell them apart.
