Windshield Replacement

Safelite came out today and worked their magic and the Z4's windshield is restored. The new glass appears to be identical to the original - all markings, shadings, etc. The receipt say OEM on it with a list price of $752.45 which matches the price for a windshield listed on a BMW dealer's site. So it looks like I got an exact replacement. I would have been very surprised if Safelite could have found anything other than OEM - who's going to produce a knock-off for a car that has such limited production.

Happily, living in Florida the insurance company is paying for everything (no deductible) on the repair. Unhappily, insurance rates are outrageous in Florida!

I agree, the $0 deductible for windshield coverage is the one positive in Florida's expensive car insurance. I mentioned this in your trip report and am glad it all worked out for you!

By the way, was there a reason why you didn't just have your dealer replace the glass?

assume you don't have a HUD ... seems to be a bargain for a windshield if it is a HUD windshield

If you have HUD why would the OEM windshield for the Z4 only be $752.45, am I missing something here?

Not sure why with a HUD it would be more. The HUD doesn’t come from the windshield but projected onto the glass? I’m confused. Time to do some research.

Driving Assistant(5AS) & HUD(610) are different equipment. Correct part depends on other special equipment - not just HUD. This older version of the ETK is sometimes helpful:

My insurance carrier (USAA) works with Safelite and will take care of the entire cost. Safelite charged a flat fee of $350 for the installation and came to the house. Easy peasy!

I read somewhere that an owner that went to his dealership for a windshield replacement was surprised that they didn't actually do the work. They used a third party (Safelite?) to do the install but of course marked it up on the customer's invoice.

I have all the bells and whistles - HUD, Speed Limit camera, rain sensor and auto head lights. I too was very surprised at the price Safelite charged USAA for the windshield - list price $752.45 marked down to $188.64! If I could get that price I would buy an extra and store it in the attic.

From their invoice:
1 FW05233 GTYOEM $752.45 $188.64 $111.63 $13.19 $0.00 $313.46
Replace with new - SOLAR~HEADS UP DISP~RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR~LD

fancy invisible reflective layer on the area the HUD projects onto the windshield. Without it, HUD looks like shit/blurry. Many posts on the forums over the years with people getting windshield replacement at safelite and the likes, not getting HUD glass, then bitching about how shitty the HUD looks after windshield replacement

For this, BMW charges almost 4 times the cost of the standard windshield for HUD compatible windshield in all my previous BMW s with the HUD option ... that's why I was surprised at the cost for a HUD compatible G29 windshield posted above under $1k!

doesn't hurt to ask

If you get them to bite at the price, buy 2 and I'll send you $200 on venmo and come pickup one for myself as a spare for the attic as well!

Had my windshield replaced today due to too many rock chips. Just bugged me. Went with Pilkington glass (which is a BMW OEM supplier). Saved over 30% vs BMW glass. However, windshield lacks the BMW logo. Hope no one looks that hard. Haha. Heads up and tech all seem to work fine.

I was surprised, but it checks out. The BMW MSRP for the Z4 KAFAS/HUD windshield is $796. For the G05 X5, it's $1769. I had the X5 windshield replaced about a month ago. USAA paid almost $2500 total and I got BMW glass without asking. I went through a good local glass shop that's an "approved Safelite partner" so Safelite still does the paperwork.

My dealer doesn't do glass. They farm it out to a local shop. There is one dealer in the area that has a body shop. They will do the glass, but won't deal with insurance companies. You have to pay them and then file a claim after the fact. I did go through them about 8 years ago for my 330i. Their price was almost double what Safelite charged (and it didn't have a HUD.) But insurance did reimburse me the full amount.

This was the case with a 4 series coupe that I had. Had a stone chip on the windscreen and took it to the dealer. They took to a specialist company down the road. Insurance paid for everything
