BMW Z4 Facelift 2022 Erlkönig: Do we see the G29 LCI here?

The BMW Z4 Facelift (G29 LCI) will be on the market in almost exactly one year, but no prototypes of the roadster have yet to be seen. Last week, however, one of our readers drove this heavily camouflaged prototype in front of the lens in the north of Munich, which may give us a few first impressions of the model upgrade planned for autumn 2022 - even if, due to the many camouflages, practically no surprising details can be seen. Headlights and taillights are unchanged and undisguised, the aprons are reminiscent of the current M Sport package.

The presumably minor changes to the prototype do not necessarily mean that it cannot be a BMW Z4 Facelift 2022, because in principle no one should expect a massive change in the familiar look: Already due to the relatively low number of units compared to other series Those responsible have no increased interest in high investments for the model upgrade and rather try to keep the roadster fresh with smaller measures. The same procedure could also be observed with the previous generation E89, in which the facelift was more of a case for connoisseurs than a revolution.

According to our information, this trend will also apply to the interior of the two-seater: unlike the 3-series facelift (G20 LCI) , the BMW Z4 2022 will not have a curved display even after the facelift. Such a change would require a completely new dashboard, which just doesn't make sense given the Z4's numbers. It is also questionable whether the large curved display would not dominate the relatively small interior of the roadster too much.

All questions about a possible BMW Z4 Coupé that could use the technology of the Toyota Supra remain unanswered . Recently, the rumors about such an offshoot - just like the one about a Supra Roadster - had become noticeably quieter and it currently does not look as if there would be concrete plans for corresponding models. Final clarity on these and other questions should bring the next few months, because after the introduction of the facelift, which traditionally starts at halfway through the model cycle, another body variant is practically impossible.

So if the changes are so minor what are we looking at, new wheels and some new colors?

Well.. this heavily camo'ed vehicle is a 30i with the M Sports package, but from what I understand, this is more of a mechanical test more so than "this is what it's gonna look like."

This is a big deal. I had heard rumors that the 2022 was the last year.

It's a ploy. It's not a redesign just a new paint scheme available - groovy baby!

Couldn't see any cameras in the side mirrors. That's my biggie - I want an integrated camera system for crash documentation.

We've had some discussions here before and the Z4 is due to go bye bye 2025.

By the looks of it they downgraded the wheels to "17 (look at the side wall height) the exact same ones I purchased from BMW for my winter tires.

It has been published by BMW that EOP is 2025 and the LCI is MY2023. What that means in the long run is anyone's guess.

2022 BMW Z4 Facelift allegedly spied on the road

The BMW Z4 Facelift model is expected to arrive in late 2022. But as always, ahead of the market launch, BMW is going through rigorous testing processes. A G29 Z4 LCI prototype was spotted in Munich earlier this week, of course wearing the typical BMW camouflage.

Oddly, the headlights and taillights are fully uncovered, even though they are the first to change in a facelift. Yet, we still expect them to feature a slightly different design so for now, it’s likely that BMW is mostly testing some hardware changes. Under the camo we can also see the current M Sport Package, which seems to be unchanged as well.

Being a low volume car, the BMW Z4 Roadster doesn’t get all of attention when it comes to facelifts. A similar theme was obvious in the previous generation E89 Z4. But we certainly expect enough upgrades to keep the Z4 an interesting proposition for potential customers.

Unlike the 3 Series facelift, the 2022 BMW Z4 will not have a curved display even after the facelift. Such a change would require a completely new dashboard, which just doesn’t make sense given the sales numbers of the Z4. It’s also obvious that the large curved display would be out of place in a small cockpit, like the Z4’s one.

BMW is likely to keep the Z4 Roadster around for another three years, but after that, its faith is unknown. There will likely never be a combustion-powered Z4, but the beautiful roadster might resurface as a fully electric vehicle in the future. BMW is marching towards a fully electric fleet, so eventually a fun and nimble electric roadster would make sense.

Until then, the Z29 BMW Z4 Roadster is arguably one of the most fun BMWs to drive today and certainly one of the last of its kind.

I always thought I would get an older beemer.
Do some fiberglass work on it and wrap it with this kind of camo job and drive around see if I get attention lol

No chance that 2022 is the last year for the Z4

The tooling is paid for and theres no way this body style runs only 3.5 years. Toyota Supra is selling well and as long as thats the case the Z4 goes on. If they do an LCI for MY22 then the car will run through at least 2024. BMW has never run a body style only 3.5 years.

I also wish they would make it look more like its concept. It's aloooooot more agressive looking. Mix between the Z4 and F-Type.

Germany has a winter tire mandate, so they may very well be winter tires.

Thanks for posting this.

I thought we saw spy pics with less camouflage earlier. Does that mean they are potentially adding other (more) changes?

Wouldn't think they camouflage a car to test paint changes or under the hood changes…

Agreed. They should have built it like the concept.

Especially the shape behind the driver and passenger seats.

Passenger seats?

All kidding aside, while the top cover is desirable; I wouldn't want the folded top to cut into the trunk space.
