Cross shopped the Corvette C8 - I went with Z4
Has anyone seriously considered the Corvette C8 HTC or cross shopped with the Z4m40i ?
I have and went with the Z4 but curious if others have as well and reasons as to how they made their decision. For me reasons I went with the Z4: - Z4m40i was much better value (72k msrp with 5% dealer discount 68k vs C8 HTC 2LT at 86k msrp) for similarly optioned car both custom orders. Thats almost 20k difference. - Z4m40i felt more fun to drive, the C8 felt much more boxy and heavy - Z4m40i sounded much better, C8 exhaust sound was disappointing - Z4m40i felt luxurious on the inside and had things like ambient lighting, the C8 felt cheaper on the inside and missing that luxury feel - Interest rates will go up by the time my C8 would arrive early next year, costing me extra thousands (4-6k more I estimate) - Wait time for the Z4 is 1/4 of that of the C8. - Better gas mileage - More features such as Active Cruise Control in stop and go traffic, Self Parking etc. Reasons I considered the C8 - Better resale value - Ferrari-ish exotic exterior look of the car Interested to hear if others crossed shopped the C8! |

I thought about it but not for long. I like the C8 but it's still a Corvette and ultimately, I just didn't want one. Performance of the C8 is superior but as you said, the size and visability don't give me the feel I was looking for.
I was closer to going with the Boxster S but at the time, the only engine was the 4cyl (not a fan) and the price was 50% more. Dave |

My last vette was a 2014 C7. My eighth of various generations. I had no twinge for the C8 last fall when I got my Z4 M40i and have had none since! Ride, quality, handling, performance, comfort, service, etc., all top notch. This is my 5th BMW, all performance models and if I was one to get a tatoo, it would be a roundell! I am in the BMW garage for the duration.

I cross shopped and it was really a close call for me. The deciding factor was the availability of the Z4. However, I placed my order in December and still do not even have an allocation. With several month build times I doubt I will get a 2022 at all.

I thought about the C8 as well, but it came down to just one thing for me: I don't want to pull up to the stoplight next to a car that looks like mine. It seriously bugs me. Give the C8 a couple years and they'll be everywhere, just like every previous Vette generation. Not that I'd kick a McClaren out of my garage, but I see one about once a week around here. How many G29 Z4s do I see? Hardly any.

If you're looking for a convertible sports car these days there are so few options that you really can't leave anything out when shopping.
My build of the C8 was I think like $10k more than the Z4 so it wasn't that big of a difference. In the past I would never have considered a Corvette but the C8 I might consider. The reviews are great, though I haven't been able to find one to drive. And I wasn't willing to wait that long or pay the dealer markups they were charging even pre-covid. The comparable Porsche is a LOT more expensive, esp if you want the 6 cyl. So all things considered the Z4 is a relative bargain.

I looked at the latest Corvette. 10-15k more on what I'm already trying to justify to spend. The Porsche even more so (Upgrading the sports car, for me, is a want, not a need).
The styling is just so different. The Z4 is a 'classic' roadster and much more 'convertible' than the C8 convertible. I have sat in a C8, and it is nice. Have not even sat in a Z4 because I can't find one! |

The C8 was briefly on my list of potential convertibles. I like and always figured I'd own a Corvette at some point, but just haven't yet.
But ultimately I was put off by the styling (a little too busy for me), the MSRP pricing ($90-100k for a 2LT or 3LT convertible with the options I wanted), and dealer markups. So much so that besides looking at a couple cars up close, I didn't even bother to test drive one. Every car is a compromise of some sort, and based on the kind of driving I imagine myself doing with it, the Z4 is a the Goldilocks solution: It's a purpose built convertible 2-seater, offers excellent (but not supercar) performance, surprisingly good gas mileage, appealing styling, all day comfort, roomier than a Miata but still more compact than a C8 or an AMG GT C roadster (I'd rather have this than any 911), and at a more reasonable cost (compared to a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, AMG GT C, or a C8; or even any of a number of used cars right now). And it is rare: I've seen more 8-series cars (an M850i and M8 convertible on the same ride home) on the road than I have Z4s (0) in the past few days. In the spring of 2021, I decided that I wanted a C8. My last two cars had turbo's and they annoyed me. So I went on a search, a failed search, for a C8 I was willing to purchase. I couldn't find many, and they were overpriced.
Note, I have never liked the Vette before the C8, so it is the totally new design that attracts me, not the mystique of the Vette. So, in April, as a kind of consolation prize, I looked to the Z4 and found an M40i that just arrived at the dealer, mostly loaded (no adaptive cruise control) and with an extra $3000 for the paint (I love the Frozen Grey but would never voluntarily pay $3000 for it). Now, I love the Z4 and have been having a grand old time with it. However, in April '21 I put a deposit down for a C8, which has finally moved me to the top of the waiting list this last week. Because of some constraints on the order (I had to include the Z51 package and magnetic ride control was not available), I decided to wait a little while longer on ordering the C8. However, I expect to order it in the next month or so. So why trade my Z4 for a C8? It's not an easy decision, but let's see if I can sort it out... - I had my heart set on the C8, the idea of having a (almost) mid-engine super car hits my youthful fantasies (note, I am 70). - While I got almost what I wanted on the Z4, I can get exactly what I want on the C8. - I've had my fun with the Z4, so the C8 just offers different fun (and note, at age 70, I must face the fact I only have so many fun driving years left). - The C8 offers some fun toys the Z4 doesn't offer (but then again, I will lose some as well). - While the Z4 is a great GT and a good sports car, I think the C8 offers great GT and great sports car. - Yes, the Z4 interior is more luxurious than the C8, but the interior of the Z4 is still 'common'. It's pretty much exactly the same as my wife's X3. The interior of the C8 is unique. - Both cars are unicorns, the Z4 even more so than the C8. But when I take my Z4 to car shows, the C8's still get all the attention. - The Z4 has held its price, but I expect the C8 bought at MSRP will increase in value by $20k as I drive it off the lot. - While I have no complaints about the Z4's turbo, the C8 is naturally aspirated. - Owning the Z4 does allow me to be very patient waiting for the C8. So, I expect/hope to be in a C8 by the end of the summer. However, if so, I will very much miss my Z4.

The Z51 performance package, Magneride for Z51, and front lift options seemed like must-haves as far as options.
Are you planning on LT2 or LT3? And convertible or coupe? Quote:
