Now that I've taken delivery of my M40i.

I can aptly say that YES, upgrading from a 30i to an M40i is well worth it lol

I have taken the hit a couple times for buying the wrong car. But, if you aren't happy with it, what's the point of waiting?

I have a few times myself.. not so much the wrong car, but perhaps not the spec that I would have preferred. In this case... I got the 30i cause that's what I could afford at the time. BUt... new job opportunity made this an option and it wasn't something I could idly sit on.

We have bought the wrong (new) car. We have had a couple of Subaru Outback’s, then went to a Crosstrek. Sold it a year later to a neighbor and bought another Outback.

I will say that the Subaru is not the ‘best’ vehicle manufacturer - has a cult-like following - but it’s the cheapest station wagon you can find, every other manufacturer a step up in price.

This is similar to the 2-seater market. The price difference between the Miata and a Z4 is a significant step up in price.

These are two US limited markets.

Subaru has a reputation for being safe and reliable, my son owned one for 10 years and parked it on the street in Chicago. During their freezing winters it started every single time and he never had issues driving it on their snowy streets as long as they were reasonably plowed.

My father was in love with the Crosstrek on looks alone. I went to test drive with him and the road noise at only 30mph was insane for a modern vehicle. He fell out of love with it immediately.

Yes the Crosstrek looks quite attractive, but we found it too small, and the plastic seemed a bit cheaper than the outback. Surprisingly, built in Japan. Definitely 'cheaper' overall than the Outback, which may have contributed to the noise.

I also own a Crosstrek and its by far one of the best "overall" vehicles I've ever owned. Reliable, quiet, good mileage, tough, made well... etc. My crosstrek is a 2022 though, and it was an upgrade over older models at the time. We got the sport edition.

It's definitely built to a price point.

Me and my wife have considered getting one as a "third car" precisely because it's small and affordable (to use as a beater car), but still has a hatch. So there's definitely a market for that.

Really????? What year? We have a 2022, and noticed that it's a really quiet car! Especially compared to the likes of a CX-5 and Even Honda Civic.

He was looking at pre-owned 2020’s I believe. The road noise was MUCH louder then my CX5, honesty I was even surprised, did not expect it.

I owned a Subaru Forester XT for 11 years, gave it to my son-in-law who drove it for 6 years and gave it to my grandson this year. It had nearly 300k miles and 3 engines when my grandson sold it. For a small SUV, it is quite light (3200 lbs) and has lots of room. The interior materials and finish is such you didn't have to worry about damaging it. In all, it was very versatile and reliable, had great handling and decent performance. I wish it had a conventional engine, though. Turbocharged flat 4s are crap!

Always thought the 2.5 EJ25 in my 2004 WRX STi was an excellent engine. Sounded distinctive too. No complaints from me re: flat-four turbos, except I wouldn’t want one in a Boxster.

We had a 2019 (maybe '18?) made in Japan. If you have the 2022 it's made in the USA - probably Indiana. Soooo...made in the USA is good for something?

I was told that it was still built in Japan, but honestly, I don't know. What I DO know is that the battery was dead this morning and I'm very grumpy lol. We've put like 45000 miles on the car in less than 2 years.

We are sooooooooo far off topic. >,<

I really do hope that we answered the OP's question.

The flat 4 is difficult to modify and doesn't yield the output you can get from an inline engine for the dollars you spend. Plus, they burn oil as they get older because the top side of the cylinders tend to not get enough lubrication and oil pools on the bottom side.

Wow, it's amazing how many people here owned Subarus. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the we have beaten the 30i versus M40i to death.

Yes, mine always consumed a little oil even when it was new. And the #4 pistons were prone to melting depending upon mods.

Mine had a stage 1 tune with a cat-back exhaust making 300whp/300lbs-ft torque on the tuner’s dyno which was perfect for me. I didn’t buy it with any expectation or need for bigger HP numbers as with those opting for the Evo and it’s inline engine.

Never had any mechanical problems besides oil consumption in the time I owned it, and I had it for eight years and it was my daily at the time.

I still rate it as a great car - I kept it far longer than I thought I would at the time of purchase - and I loved the sound of the flat four. Resale on these cars is still ridiculously high today.

I agree, I just wished it had a conventional engine. My grandson sold it for $2500 with 288k miles and lots of stuff that didn't work any more. The guy who bought it wanted to convert it to rear wheel drive with an LS6 in it.
