I think just maintaining the level of charge rather than increasing it is fairly common if the phone is being used to play music or for google maps. I get the same thing on my Honda civic. But the Civic doesn’t get the phone abnormally hot 😜

The Issue that causes overheating is the design of most modern phones, precisely the camera bump. The camera bump prevents the phone from laying completely flat and causes the phone to wobble in place while driving. The wobbling causes the induction charging to keep disconnecting and reconnecting and thereby heating up .

I had this issue when I had my iPhone 12 pro max. When I got my 14 pro max I got a minimal bumper case that has raised edges that keeps the phone completely flat on its back. Since then I have noticed no overheating with the phone on the wireless charger in the car.

Maybe I will try removing the phone from its case if using the wireless charger for any length of time.

I have a hard case with slightly raised edges all around that as the poster says, keeps the phone essentially flat. I have no overheating issues. Love the wireless charging, no futzing with wires.

I experimented with that once with my 15 Pro Max. It didn’t seem to make a difference but, of course, the cameras still prevented the phone from lying flat. From what I understand, greatest efficiency and least heat generation is with the charging coil perfectly mated to the phone element so I can see how the camera bump could cause issues.

The wireless charging came as standard on the Thailand spec car, so I don’t feel like I paid extra for it. If I can get it to work reasonably well, then I’m happy, if I can’t, then I’ll use a cable, and I’ll be happy.

If it had been an optional extra that I chose and paid for, I might feel a bit peeved based on my current experience. But it’s not the end of the world. 😁

New User, thanks for allowing me into the forum.

Not to hijack this thread but I took delivery on a, new to me 2020 Z4 a couple days ago. I have an iPhone 13 Pro max and nothing I seem to do will make this charger work. Removed the case, moved it around, flipped it over, stood on my head, nothing. Is there a secret initiation hand shake I'm missing?

I said it before and I will say it again, save your money and forget about the wireless charger.

Go old fashioned with a charging cable. I use a 3 foot coiled cable which costs about $15 on Amazon that retracts and doesn’t hang down to the floor.

If it's not working at all (meaning you're not getting the blue light to indicate it's charging) it could be turned off. It's somewhere in the iDrive settings. I can look in my car later for the exact menu location unless someone else knows of the top of their head.

General internet consensus is that phone cases that are not flat cause the immense heat generation. Meaning, if your phone is caseless, or has a case with a camera bump protector the charging coil is going to overwork itself and the create intense heat you're seeing. The scary heat really only happens when streaming music and navigation at the same time.

It's a common complaint across all recent BMW owners. So you are not alone. Not a lot out there other than using a cable and/or trying to find a perfectly flat case.

Welcome to the club. The wireless charger is not included in all Z4s. You might have just the comfort access key, which enables you to start your car with your phone but the pad does not actually charge the vehicle . If you have the window sticker or build sheet , try to check to see that wireless charging is included .

Thanks, it certainly looks like a wireless charger to me.

Mine looks like that and I don't have wireless charging (only option I didn't get).

That's where you put the digital key card (or your phone if you've set it up to act as a key).

That’s not confusing or anything, thanks.

Yeah, this isn't the wireless charger. There is a little picture of a lightning bolt in that icon in the middle if it also does wireless charging.

Guess I'd be waiting a long time for my phone to charge lol.

Thanks for the input everyone.
