Thundernight In Real Life

I have a preliminary order in for an m40i. I can still make changes

I am very intrigued by Thundernight. No offense intended to TN owners, but it seems to me that the color doesn't really "pop" in photos the way I expected it to. It's like the reflections wash out the color in the highlights while the shadows look dark. Is it brighter or does it otherwise pop more IRL?

Is there anyone with TN in the DFW area that is willing to show off their car "in real life"? My dealer doesn't have anything in stock in that color.

I personally think it's a stunning color and really pops in the sunlight. Yeah, it's a dark color so it's a bit more muted in the shadows.

But I will also say that it attracts attention more than any other color car I've had. Most people really like like it. I did PCD last week and the car was in the front lobby. There was a corporate event going on the same day and all of that crowd was gawking at it as they went through the lobby.

I mentioned it to one of the delivery guys and he said Thundernight definitely stands out. He said they see maybe 2 or 3 cars a month in that color. It's only available on the Z4 and the 2 series.

I had some reservation about it before ordering, but we were able to find an M240i in TM at a dealership. That was enough to convince us.

A good friend of mine ordered a M240i last year and was going to order Thundernight. At the last minute because he couldn’t see a Thundernight car in person he chickened out and ordered Portimao Blue. Now he regrets that decision.

PB is my currently specced choice :-) We know we really like it because we used to have an M340i in PB. OTOH, that's a reason to get something different.

I really like TN! It does not "pop" as much as one would think, unless in bright sunlight, but I have had young guys say: "Sick color!" when I drove past, and I think that is good. :-)

FWIW, I think that the shadowline and black wheels etc., work better than the lighter metal trims and wheels.

I am really glad I selected this color and wouldn't change.

I totally agree that Shadowline and black wheels enhance the color. I would also go with the Moonlight top on this combination..

I posted this pic on another thread, but I think it shows some of the tonal variations in color you can see with Thundernight Metallic. This was taken later in the day, with partial shade, etc.

Hope it helps with your decision.

Does the picture do a good job rendering what it looks like through your own eyes?

Yes, it does. Which is why I included it, even if not in the most scenic of settings.

Looks especially great with the brake calipers in a neutral color

I saw an M40 in Thunderbolt and its not very bright

I was about to order a MY23 in Thundernight in the summer and went to a local dealer to see it. I have a '19 Misano blue 3.0 now and I like bright colors. It was a partly cloudy day and the purple color didn't have any pop at all. It was kind of dark and dull. It's less bright than I expected after seeing the MY24 launch pictures. The BMW photos are under optimal lighting IMO.

Agree. I don't think Thundernight is that complicated of a choice. It's clearly purple. Like most/many car colors, at dusk or in the right lighting it can really pop.

But otherwise? It's purple. Nothing wrong with that. At least it isn't "Blurple."
