I’m usually in adaptive mode with the shift lever to the left until I get to the fun roads and then switch to sport plus and then back to adaptive road once I hit traffic and lots of traffic control signals and signs on the way back.

Most of my time in adaptive mode feels indistinguishable from comfort mode as I’m usually not pushing it very hard. Driving without the shifter left feels too soft to me though and I don’t particularly like auto-start/stop (again, jerky starts and stops), so going left is an easy way to disable it.

automatic for me.
it's faster, and more comfortable.
And with the xHP tune on the auto gearbox, it probably sounds a lot better than a manual ever will

I have no doubt you are correct about performance and sound with automatic, but I still chose manual.

Also appreciate the easy start stop disable! I was initially partial to adaptive but started using sport more after LCI console change and now prefer it. I save sport plus for when I want extra noise.

Always had a manual. 3 previous generations of M3, a Z3 M Roadster and recently a Mustang GT350. Had DCT in a Z4 35is and loved it. Now have a 2022 Z4 M40i and maybe I’m soft now but I prefer the auto. In this car it’s a blast and way quicker than I could shift obviously. The shifts sound so good too

The auto is very good.

Official 0-60 for the manual is 4.2
BMW rates the auto at 3.9

The difference won’t matter for people who want that level of driver engagement.

Currently my 21' M440I convertible is the only BMW ever that is not manual. In fact after I decided to sell my 21' M2 competition(6 speed manual) I was actually looking at the z4. Decided against it because it only has an automatic transmission. The M2 comp. was just too harsh of a ride for street driving. I had a 21' M240I(6 sp manual) which had adaptive suspension which was much more tolerable. Since I always wanted a true "M" car I eventually sold the M240I and got the M2 Comp. Looking back it was a mistake.

Now that BMW decided to put a manual in the Z4 I may have to take a look at the Z4 again. I am hoping that it is easier to get into and out of the Z4 than my Miata(lowered by 1'). However, I really do not know what I would gain by going to a Z4 from a M440I convertible except the new z4 would have a manual transmission. Both have the same B58 engine. I will have to say I really missed the nimble handling of a smaller and lighter manual sport car. I told everyone my M440I is an old man's convertible(I am almost 62).

My 82 year old body has no trouble getting in & out of the Z4. Neither does my 80 year old wife. The Z4 is her favorite ride.

The Z4 is just a M440/M4 with the back seat section cut out & the rear wheels moved forward. Only real spacial difference is the lower roofline at the top of the door glass.

Am 5'10" @ 205lbs. Getting in/out roof down nothing special. Roof up, plant rear on the seat facing out the door feet on the ground. Pick up feet turn 90*to the right & buckle up.

Something a lot of us who are the primary or only driver is set the seat memory 1 at the driving position & position 2 at full back.

Simple answer to the performance question is the Z4 will do everything start, stop, launch, turn, accelerate from any speed roll, mpg, quicker/faster/better than the M440

Every year when I go to visits my wife’s family in Germany the rental is a manual. It’s fun for about the first day. After two weeks around town I’m reminded why I now have automatics. Would I want to drive the new MT? Yes. Would I want to own it? Nope.

I like the manuals so much that I ordered the 20i instead of the 30i for my daily. (Which was the only option to get 6MT in November, although the M40 wasn't an option for me anyway - too expensive and too powerful for my needs and the driving style I prefer )

My Z4 was my first ever automatic car in my life in more than 35 years of driving.

I love a manual.
Rental cars are almost always manual.

Would I want to own a Z4 manual. . . . I'm really not sure.

“Around town” are the operative two words imho. Around town an automatic is more convenient. Open road? That’s a different scenario.

I wonder what the manual transmission option will do for Z4 sales? I'm thinking not much. It just isn't a very popular model. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more around, so if it helps sales, I'm all for it.

I expect a nice bump in sales. Lots of “talk” in car forums about people who would now consider the Z4. We shall see if it’s all talk lol

The Z4 is the only automatic car I've ever purchased, and I don't regret it one bit. At the same time, I'd have ordered the manual had it been available.

I want to get back into a manual, so I have an order in for an M3 6MT to replace my Z4.
