Has anyone tried a JB+ on their Z4 m40i?

I was just curious if anyone has tried one. I have a friend who wants to sell me one. He says it's good for 40+ hp at the wheels with 93 octane. The reviews I have read seem to bear this out and it isn't a lot of money. I'd think it would be an improvement you would notice.

I’m running it now. I’d say it feels more like 25-30hp? You can definitely tell it’s slightly quicker than stock but not a huge amount.

I got it used for $99 from a guy that had a m340i. He said he got a check engine light at the track for overboost. So far all good for me

If I were to pay retail price I think I would go with the Dinan unit. It does the same thing basically but you can control it via Bluetooth

I am ok California 91 octane also so you may have better results by setting it to max.

Thanks. He is only asking $125 so I think I'll give it a try. 93 octane is very common around here, I don't recall ever seeing 91 octane. Won't that void your warranty?

A little off topic, but i just don't see 20-40 hp on a 400+ hp car worth the potential warranty headache. Now if you're out of warranty, i suppose i could see it, i guess...

I'm out of warranty in 2024. So, I'll buy it and wait.

I think the e30i is too old for their product line. But you can check it out:

Read an awful horror story about bimmercode here the other day, and got a message on the app, that, in so many words, was about how unauthorized programming will absolutely get your kicked in the balls if there is an issue. It's a nope for me on all of the above.

While I'm sure it would risk problems with the warranty, the JB+ is basically just a plug-in adjustable boost controller that raises boost by up to 4.5lbs. Nothing much to worry about if you are out of warranty.

I'm not sure about that, (and I mean I just don't know or have a confirmed source) I read on several sides if BMW suspects anything, they are actually able to find out if anything external was installed to manipulate data. Was planning on the Dinan but not sure yet....

You would be surprised at how much code in modern ECUs is devoted to detecting and storing anomalies in excepted values.

Isn't racechip the same, just closer to the source, being a german company? It's also just an external device, no?

RaceChip has two connections, JB+ has one. I don't know enough about RaceChip to feel comfortable with it; does it have a map for 93 octane, does it have external monitoring and adjustments? If I wanted a more extensive tuner, I'd probably go with the JB4 because we have experience with it. I really don't have any need for more horsepower, no place to use it. But an extra 40hp for $150 with no risk factors, seemed like fun.

I used the JB+ on my Supra. It seems like the Racechip or Dinan offers a lot more and it's the same plug-in-play.

So, how much of a gain did you get with the JB+?

I have had the JB+ on my 2022 M40i since last August(ish) and I did notice a difference from pre-install to post-install (posted about it here: https://g29.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...7&postcount=46)

Long story short, I think it's noticeable, but I wasn't expecting night and day difference. Main reason I went with JB+ was I wanted just a little more out of the car, and didnt want to do a full tune. I also read a good amount of review talking about since it was just a piggy back plug and play it should not cause me too much headaches with BMW service /warranty or issues with the engine. But I understand the risk with both, and fully understand pay to play.

I am taking my car in for its year 1 oil change /maintenance this month, which I plan to remove the JB+ prior. So I will let you know if they give me any issues at the service dept.

Do you really think it's necessary to remove it just for an oil change?
