30i Engine replace recall

Has anyone else gotten the 30i engine replacement recall. Mine goes in on next Wednesday for a complete engine replace. Just curious how widespread this is.

I would have thought all of them would have been done already, original recall went out in December '19. Out of curiosity when was yours built, maybe they added more cars recently.

What was the issue?

Found it:

The main issue that was discovered is that, due to a faulty bearing for the balance shaft, the engine could suffer from a lack of construction robustness for the respective part and thus could possibly lead to physical attrition of the component as well as further engine damage. Consequently, the bearing wear might also put the vehicle safety and integrity at risk, as the powerplant could detach while driving.

Here is the actual recall. I thought most cars should have been done already, mine was built 3/19 but I recently bought it new. It should have been done before the car was sold since the recall had a stop order. Looks like 217 cars in the US, G20 and G29 series.

Guess mine slipped through the cracks. I've put just over 6000 miles on it since June. No issues. Better safe than sorry

So they are replacing the entire engine?

Yep. Had to order it and a bunch of stuff in from Germany, according to the dealership and said 1-2 days to do plus a few other small recalls. Guess I get another 1200 mi break in and a new warranty

I'd rather them replace the whole thing than tear it apart to just replace the part. Then try to put it all back together right.

I would certainly get it done, it would not look good when you sell/trade it in to have an engine replacement recall open I'd rather have them swap the whole engine then take a shot at tearing the whole thing down and replacing the balance shaft/bearings..

I thought mine was OK, I read about the recall before buying, but maybe not.

It seems the original recall was thru 4/4/19 builds. Mine build was 4/4/19. Then it got extended to 8/19 builds. I guess that explains the delay on the recall

I rejected a Honda CRV that they wanted to swap the engine on. It was on PCP and the rejection was accepted immediately with a brand new replacement car. I didn’t want something that was fitted to factory specifications and tolerances be worked on in the dealers workshop.

Mine was built 3/26/19 and delivered to the dealer late May, its possible it could have been done already and doesnt show on the BMW owner website. I bought it new mid January and I'm sure the dealer didnt want to advertise if it had the engine replaced.

From what I have read its not all of them in those date ranges, I would assume they know which engines went where..

I would guess that is correct or it may have gotten done ahead of final sale.

Mine was built on 5/2/2019 and registered as loaner in September and I leased it on 1/31/2020. How do I know if it has been replaced or not?

I'm not sure about how you would go about checking. I know it said it effected 217 cars in the US
