Thoughts on the Ready Auto start feature

One of the features of the Z4 as we all know is its shutting off the engine when stopped. It will restart when you take the foot off. The purpose I guess is to save gas

I am on the fence on this and tempted to disable it. Wondering what others have done.

I see a potential of not restarting, but have nothing to show this is a possibility

Most of my driving is highway, with some city streets. I notice that it hesitates at green lights while it restarts to accelerate.

Not a big deal, but as I said I am on the fence about it.

I don’t mind the engine stops when I have to wait a little longer, but when you have to stop frequently I think it’s just very annoying. Like you said: it’s too slow. So mostly I turn it off. Unfortunately it resets itself when you restart the car.
So I’m going to code it (using Bimmercode) so that it remembers the chosen option when I restart the car. That way I can turn if off by default and on when I want to.

Weird. Not sure if it's different for the sDrive30i vs M40i, but on the M40i it restarts as you're taking your foot off the brake, so not experiencing any latency with acceleration when I push the pedal because the car is already restarted by then.

But, the bigger issue on the M40i is how unbelievably zippy the car is in Sport + and S or M shifting mode. I don't end up using the comfort mode (where the engine turns itself off at stops) except when I first start the car up to warm the engine...

And (at least the M40i, don’t know about the 30i) the Z4 uses its sensors to detect when the car in front of you starts moving and will start the engine even before you lift the foot of the brake.

What I don’t like is when I arrive in my garage. The engine will shut off as soon as I stop, but then turn back on when I get off the brake, even though the car is in Park at that point.

First thing I do when I start the car is to switch this off.

The 30i does it too. As soon as the car in front of you starts moving, the engine will turn on. Its software related. Nothing to do with engine been from the 40i, 30i or 20i.

I feel the same. Fortunately, in the M4, you can just shut it off and it stays that way - never has to be reset. In the Z4 M40i, I always drive in Sport Individual, so it is not on. I really dislike that function and refuse to use it.

I only use it if I know I am going to be sitting at a light or drive through without moving for several minutes.

Also run Sport Individual as my normal driving mode. Had it shut off in the 440 on all driving modes using last mode on shutdown choice.

On the Z4 IIRC you can also code to last setting on shutdown & kill it in all modes. Have mine lightly coded mirror retract on lock/extend on unlock, stoplight flash etc & will have to check the menu to be sure.

Really?? Sounds like a great little feature. Is it standard or come with a certain software pack?

I think it should have something to do with the front radar included in the active cruise control, active driving assistant or traffic jam assistant options. Mine is got active cruise control.

I used Bimmercode to change the memory setting to remember last auto stop setting and then pushed the button to turn it off. Does the light stay lit all the time?

What i found it that if you have the auto hold function on, the engine will only auto start when you step on the accelerator; if its off, it will start when you release you foot from the brake pedal.

Which OBD-adapter did you use?

Which adapter did you use? I have tried 2 now (Veepeak and Uniscan) and both give an error when I try to code this option.
I use the default option in the Binmercode app.

The OBDLink LX for G series is what I got. The MX and MX+ are a waste of money for the BMW as they have features for Ford and GM.

there is an app you load for it to connect and then you use Bimmercode

BTW- when I tried to code this with the engine running I kept getting coding error. After pressing the start button to shut the engine off, the coding worked. I should have mentioned that earlier

I got rid of it when I got my stage 2 tune on my 30i. While it does have its advantages, there is way too much traffic where I am to have it on.
