New Z4 live from Singapore with top up

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Unbeknownst to pretty much everyone other than the upper upper management folk of BMW Asia, a 2nd prototype of the new Z4 was quietly flown over to Singapore for a BMW event, BMW World, and was driven in under heavy body cladding just hours after it's unveiling at Pebble Beach for a surprise showcase at our local event. (Other showcase cars include the new 8 series and the X7 concept)

Being very close to the BMW folk here, I managed to get into the show an hour before the doors opened to the public to take as many pictures as I could.

Here's another look at the new Z4. Under probably worse lighting than pebble beach. Also, shots of the car with the top up.

Overall, i really like the design. But there are some areas which i think were a little too much. For instance the mesh black grill. I was okay with the lights going for a different layout but i think if they were to break with convention on legacy design features, just do it with one part of the design, not the entire face.

The downturned black grills sadly had many commented it looked like a Kia Stinger. It also lost it's sharknose angle from the Concept which i think also hurt the aesthetic.

Interior was fantastic and felt great, car felt compact and more sporty than the current car, it felt more like an evolution from the 1st Z4 than a continuation of the 2nd gen. I could easily reach back and touch the rear wheels from the driver's seat.

Rear design was fantastic as well with a very pronounced ducktail rear lip spoiler and very nicely done rear lights.

These pictures are making the design grow on me. I feel the design compromises at the front were partly the result of BMW management unwilling to get even a few % points reductions in pedestrian crash safety score. The back is quite faithful to the concept. When I evaluate the entire design without taking into consideration the concept that previewed this, I'm actually pleased with it.

I think it looks pretty good but I am dismayed about the headlights and lack of a proper side by side angel eye design. It's one thing to update the kidneys but stay within the brands identity traits, it's another thing to just abandon those brand traits altogether.

Other than the size it looks nothing like a Miata. I actually think it looks amazing. I love how they integrated the screen into the dash a lot more than there other models. Thanks for the pics best I've seen so far of the interior.

I agree partially with your sentiments. I still have a big problem with the front. And to be honest I am surprised that so many have said they like the front. As a former E86 Z4 owner I just don't find the front looks like a Bmw at all.

Good looking car but definitely a bit overstyled, notably the front and side vents.

This segment is dying, they had to come up with something that at least wasn't "boring."

This front fascia is a Mazda, not a BMW.

Hmmm...now it's there!!
Like the car in general, but for me it is somehow missing to much BMW signature..

It doesn't have the main BMW design language, the most iconic part, next to the kidneys, is missing the typical daylight signature. Kidneys way to mainstream and similar to a lot of cars....and the front is just to narrow, should go more to the bottom. That way the side/side-front profile looks strange

Loved the concept's front and side, not the prod car

I loved the concept design for this car but not the production car. It doesn't have the German design aesthetic. Looks a lot cheaper than it costs unfortunately to me.
