But those cars that you listed won't hold a candle to a G87 with 400hp and a BMW M designed suspension ...well...unless they weigh hundreds of pounds less maybe.

This can be said for just about every new performance vehicle on the market.

It's just going to be assembled in Mexico, the original design process and development will still be done in Germany, one would assume. Realistically, any human anywhere can be properly trained to turn a screw or operate a software-driven assembly rig and not have any discernible effect on the quality of the product but let's be honest, this is just a cop-out by BMW AG, in order to save a buck and please their shareholders. It does take away a certain luster from the brand's reputation and heritage, it not being imported directly from Germany and all but whatever, I'm still saving up for one regardless because it's shaping up to be the last vehicle in this segment, with manual transmission option, before it's just a blip in the history books. |

A German thoroughbred should be German. Build all the cars in Mexico, South Africa, Korea and any of a hundred other countries but make the pride and joy that is ///M in Germany. That's why, even though owned by VW, Bugatti is still manufactured in its ancestral home in Molsheim, France. Similarly, though also owned by VW, both Lamborghini factories are still located at the company's headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy. That's, at least in part, because one is a French thoroughbred and the other an Italian one. I'm sure they could be manufactured in alternate, more economically sound, locations but I'm guessing that's not the point of the exercise. I acknowledge, G87 ain't no Chiron or Huracan Performante, but it's the principle I'm talking about not so much the event.

I've driven the majority of M's, and my Z4M Roadster is absolutely a highlight. And no one is going to convince me a Z4M is NOT a thoroughbred. I'd even consider replacing my truck with an X3M LCI if something happened to it. If this is indeed the very last small BMW M ever made with a 6MT, I couldn't care less where they assemble it. There are far more important deal breakers than that IMO.
