I've been trying to get my home mostly automated, can already feel my brain melting from all the EMF fields. (I have a gauge for that) I've started even making my own devices. I took a door sensor and made it into a water sensor instead which I also printed the holder. Now if it senses a leak under the sink or basement it sends an alert to my phone. (I know I could already buy that but why not make it more difficult)

32 landscape lights are also fully automated, with rules as well, and have full color control. Cameras (outdoor only) also have triggers. If my garage door opens after 12am, hears smoke detectors, or senses a person the lights turn on, sends alert and activate sirens.

Haven't done the locks yet but planning on it, same with audio. Oh and even my salt water fish tanks are automated...feeding, lights and pumps. I have a tropical plant and citrus sun room, automated lights and fans for those as well. Crap is addicting.

Is there a thread about automation yet? Would love to see one so we could all share ideas!
you should have a youtube channel for all this stuff DIY

Thumbs up

Finally upgraded my trusty Uniden R3 to the even mightier R7!
Just downloaded and installed the latest Firmware.
I'll give you my impressions after a few days of driving. Which may take a week or so since I don't drive very often.

Are you from the future? !

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of matte paint at all, not one bit, but I actually really like this one. I think the funky design looks great in that color/finish.

Many happy safe miles together.

Thanks for the compliments! Got lucky as these are all pre-allocated for 2022 and 2023 allocations are not yet open. My guess is that someone backed out when they got their 2022 delivery. Really interesting car, and such a different driving experience. The Hyundai / Kia twins are priced quite aggressively being full EV's with fairly decent range.

The interior is even more funky!

Looks awesome! The new Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 are probably my top choices for EV's right now, they seem to tick all the right boxes and look cool and special without shouting that they're electric. Hope you enjoy it, and very curious to hear your thoughts after you put on some miles.

It's an interesting proposition in a new market segment. Tesla is priced higher but they come with a lot of additional features, which a buyer may or may not want.

In this segment, you have the Korean twins, VW ID.4 and the upcoming Nissan Ariya plus the Toyota BZ4X. I am not sure who else may enter the fray.

They are priced to satisfy the EV rebate requirements, and offer sufficient range on a single charge, with the ability to fast charge at a suitable location. With the latter two features, it's not just a toy anymore. ~400 km range for the extended range RWD model, and charges close to 100% in 45 minutes on a DC fast charger.

My friend has a Kona EV, which still drives like a Kona, albeit with more power (read: torque steer). Since this has a dedicated EV platform, it drives much better than the Kona. Ride is more compliant and less fidgety.

And this suits our use-case. Lots of short trips in the city, with some weekend highway jaunts. It's very decent to drive. Body motions are controlled, acceleration is okay (and seamless), brakes are really good as the regen feature does a lot of braking for you. Build quality is also pretty good.

What concerns me is long-term longevity - which remains to be seen. I did purchase an extended warranty as there just appear to be so many pricy little things to go wrong.

Maybe it belongs in an 80's sci-fi movie, but the design language, however simplistic, spoke to me. Looks like a Lancia

My DW has a 2019 Kia Niro EV. The only issue so far in about 30K miles was the 12V aux battery failing. It took Kia three weeks to get one under warranty through the factory parts network, but is available and on the shelf at several local auto parts chain stores if you want to self-fund the repair or are out of warranty.

When the 12V aux battery on an EV goes dead, the car can't power on to use the high-voltage drive (traction) batteries. The 12V aux battery failing after 3-4 years is a common problem with many different brand EVs, including my BMW i3. Just something to be prepared for, and maybe even worth scheduling replacements every 2 years along with a brake fluid flush.....

Longshot here but: Anyone familiar with Clemson football stadium seating sections? I thought someone said they had season tickets once.

Specifically, which section / row letters / numbers are covered seats with seat-backs? I know most of the stadium is bleacher seats.

Thanks for the heads-up. It has a basic maintenance schedule related to a special coolant, some ATF checkup and other fluids. They also pointed out the main 12V battery ... did not realize it had a smallish life-span. Something to keep an eye on, for sure.
