Is you Z4 M40 fast?

BIMMERPOST

Hey Zed 4 M40 owners I was wondering how you like the speed/performance of your cars. I have a M340 and it is amazingly fast. Since we share the same B58 engine, or do we?

I absolutely love it. I’ve taken it on a few long road trips around NY, CT, and MA, and I find I’m comfortable for hours in it. It has amazing pickup for a car with single clutch and no launch control.

Plus, I even enjoyed it in traffic before NYC shut down. The cabin technology in the m40i has been a nice reprieve from the overly simplistic Porsche cabin tech (and terrible Porsche GPS.....).

I thought it was quick in stock form, but coming from a modded xDrive m240i the launch wasn't quite the same. Handling was significantly better. Less body roll from lower center of gravity. Had to mod it though in the end. Tried just the jb4 from the m240i initially and enjoyed it a bit. Ended going catless and stage 2 BM3 and it puts a shit grin on my face every time I decide to gas it in 3rd and the ass starts to slide out (sport+, manual shift, DTC on, DSC off)

I’m heading in that direction eventually. It helps that I have a 997.2 GT3 RS to play around with also to slow that process down, but eventually I’m going to want more power.

Sort of up in the air on that. Car currently can overpower the tires from a dead start. Also looses time with a short strip on the one two shift.

Expect more power will be a chase. More power, more tire. More tire, beef-up the half-shafts & so on.

Dragy already has it under 4 seconds to 60 but would take a lot more work to catch the cars at the next performance level.

I would guess that my m340 has the advantage of AWD. Best stock 0-60 I have seen is 4.0 seconds.
The Zed would be under that by a few ticks due to 500lbs lighter, provided a perfect hook up

Agree it will run in the high 3's pure stock. Better to drive it than use LC.

It feels faster now...

Just had it tuned with catless downpipes installed... made nice power gains.

Current modifications
- H&R Springs
- 12.5mm spacers all round
- Catless downpipes
- Custom ECU tune

Its not really the same thing apples to oranges. The 8ZF is a classic single shaft type AT that uses internal clutch packs to manage the planetary gear sets. A torque converter sits where a clutch would be on a manual transmission.

The DCT is a fully geared transmission (same as a manual box) with two shafts each having its own clutch external from the gear set case.

In the Porsche PDK (DCT) supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen most of the parts are also used in the Porsche MT.

Test drove a 30i yesterday. About shit in my pants it's so fast and responsive. You're not getting but about 1/2 second more speed 0-60 with a 40i and paying dearly for it.

the difference is more like 1.0 - 1.5 sec. zero to 60. Quarter mile is 13.8 at 100.7 vs. 12.4 at 112. If you're happy with the 30i, that's great and everyone has a different budget, but from a power/speed perspective, the difference is large.

I think that using the price difference in terms of power/speed is really myopic. You need to compare the standard features list on a 30i to a 40i. You will find that you get way more than power speed in "what you are "paying dearly for". Even the body differences are worth extra to me as I like the 40i much better.

I think M40i = small well spent upcharge over 30i w/ track pack.
