Is the Z4 dead?

I want to order a Z4, but as far as I can tell, BMW is not only not making them right now, but they are not taking orders, and there is virtually no inventory available.

Does anyone have concrete information about whether BMW is killing the Z4? I've seen no good sources on what the z4's fate is, I've only seen speculation.

I'm currently negotiating with a Texas dealership and nothing has been mentioned regarding any glitches. 4-6 weeks delivery delay on a new build is what I'm hearing.

The Steyr plant is giving tours so the factory must be in production? https://www.bmw-besuchen.com/visitbm...ation/?lang=en

My understanding is that other models are being allocated now, but not the Z4. I wonder if the issue is specific to the plant where the Z4 is being built.

My dealer said that there are no Z4 allocations available in the US right now, and that if I "got in a queue" so that I'd get an allocation when it was available, I may not get the car untril after the spring.

Z4 Builds

I just talked to my CA today. I ordered a Z4 the third week of Oct. I have a Jan. 3 build date with a Feb. 2021 expected delivery date. This is about 1 month later than original estimate.

So I wonder if you were one of the last to be able to order. Sounds like production is rolling, but planned to stop.

Had my 328 in for a free vanos repair and was killing some time with my SA. I specifically asked him what was the allocation and time frame for ordering a m40i. He said no issues and would be 8 to 10 weeks. I guess I’ll find out if I pull the trigger in the spring.

I'm checking with a second dealer. 8 to 10 weeks is OK. But 15 or more is sort of ridiculous, especially when it is not firm.

My SA mentioned that since sales are slow in the winter lead times are stretched. It makes sense as it’s a two seat, rear wheel drive car that basically is as impractical as my Harley Davidson tour bike is in the east coast winter! The only reason I am ordering one is because we have an X5 and are empty nesters, so the Z4 will be my new motorcycle. In other words it will be an additional new toy!

Just because a dealer currently has allocation(s) doesn't mean they will still have one in the spring.

Summer Down South

You've got to remember that the Z4 is sold worldwide and that it is heading towards summer now in southern latitudes. Where would you allocate production slots? Almost certainly where convertible sales will be strongest. Come March and April in North America and there will probably be many production spots allocated. Have patience.

True, but I can wait. I have not seen one 2019+ Z4 in my state, so not worried about anyone beating me to order!

Just got this reply and final offer from one of 3 local dealers I've talked to:

"If we order one it could be around March/April possibly before it gets delivered. But that is CUSTOM for you, really worth the wait. My GSM said we can do the 3 grand off MSRP and add the USAA no problem. At the moment there is no loyalty for Z4 models. But we will do the 3 thousand off MSRP and the USAA. Does that sound like a deal? "

That's about 5.3% off MSRP. Invoice on a Z4 is a 6%. Sound like a good deal for this weird day and age? 30i

That time line is similar to I heard, which was 4 months or possibly more.

Just faxed my signed order and all the paperwork that goes with it to my sales guy. Negotiated 6% off total on a 30i build. Am damn happy with the deal considering all the Covid stuff.

BTW, don't forget you get another $500 off if you're a member of BMW CCA. Just need to file the application. I got a $1,000 CCA rebate on my 2019 X5 last year.

My application for the CCA rebate was denied because I had received the USAA discount and they are not combine-able.

Thanks for the heads up. Apparently that's no longer the case:

I'm in status 112 with the start of production scheduled for the 3rd week in January. Magna Steyr shut down in March but reopened a few weeks later and has been building ever since. I believe the factory is exempt during the current shutdown underway in some E.U. countries. The fact that my car is scheduled would seem to prove that the Z4 is very much alive.

Not really

There is ZERO chance that BMW is killing the G29 Z4. They will run this body style out for 5-7 years (with an LCI Id bet after Y3) as all of the tooling is already paid for and they have a long term deal for Magna to make the car for them. Plus the Supra has been very successful and thats made on the same line with many of the same parts (engine included now).
