Why Sigma doesn't make some super-tele primes is beyond me. Their zooms are not even close to Canon/Nikon primes, IMHO, but they have the ability to fill a huge hole in the $4000 to $9000 range with relatively fast (f/4 or f/3.5 for super-teles) and should be able to develop very competitive (IQ wise) primes.

They've got enough market share and respect in the super-tele zoom market that I'd think that they could afford to invest in developing a killer 600mm f/4 prime. I'd be very interested to try something like that.

If you absolutely can't afford the Canon/Nikon super-tele primes, then I think that Sigma is the way to go. Yes, you sacrifice some IQ, but your wallet stays much, much fatter. However, if you can afford $5000 to $6000, then the Series I Canon primes can't be beat.

damn... that's a big lens. I feel like anyone owning that is overcompensating for something.

yeah, only just realized they pretty much only have the 500 F4.5 and the 800 F5.6

800 is massive

I'd put a big super-tele on the MkIII and keep a 70-200mm on the 7D, with the 7D slung around my neck in case a mountain lion, deer, elk, etc. steps in front of me and the super-tele is too long. Swapping lenses is simply too slow.

The 7D is probably still going to be superior for well lit macros.

What's interesting is that I don't think they'll discontinue the 5D2 or lower the price by much. It's still a great camera, and there is enough of a difference in prices between the 5D2, 5D3, 1Dx that it'll remain in their lineup.

I was hoping for the 5D3 to be closer to $3k, but oh well.

I 100% agree, I see a lot of photographers using the 5DIII as the main and keeping their MKII as a backup.

I use my 7D for 90% of my macro fun just because of the remote trigger ability, extra zoom, and sharpness. The 5DIII may have the same sharpness in the end, but as far as I can tell, I can't remotely trigger flashes without a popper (haven't seen any info on it yet)

But if I do end up with the mk III I will get rid of one of the 2 either the MKII or the 7D. Time will tell.

It's starting to creep up there for sure. But in some ways a lot of the improvements are worth that. And of course, that was 4 years ago, inflation sucks.

You can remote-trigger easily and reliably with a pretty cheap Paul C. Buff trigger. As Dave said, I think it makes more sense to keep the 7D than the 5D2 if you get the 5D3 and want to keep two cameras.

I refuse to believe inflation has caused these price increases. Nikons should be affected by the same inflation... in fact, they were much harder hit with the floods than Canon ever was.

I agree, but for a wedding photog, I'm willing to bet they would stick with the MKII and MKIII

for someone like Dave, it's the MKIII and 7D for the extra reach and sharpness...

I suspect.

I would likely end up falling into the second category unless I end up taking up photography as a profession... (I kinda doubt it.)

it's fine to have a 5D2 as a backup, it's just that essentially you have a similar camera as a backup. The 5D3 was a much-needed evolutionary change from the 5D2. If you want something more versatile, a 7D would really complement it. As far as a backup camera to a 5D3, the 5D2 is more appropriate.

I wonder what Nikon was thinking with their D800... very good camera, but it seems very different from the D700.

I think Nikon thought that they were still at war with Canon.

meanwhile Canon was like, "here's what we need to fix in our camera"

So I'm thinking Nikon just said, "we need to do what Canon did to us a few years back when they gave the world the 21mp when we were only at 12 (or something like that)"

I doubt that the X gets f/8 AF. I think it's a hardware limitation, not firmware, but I could be wrong (hopefully). BTW, the X is a FF sensor body, with even fewer pixels than the 5D MkIII. Also, there's nothing "cheap" about $6800 for the X body.

The Series II super-teles have a strong attraction for me because they're pounds lighter than my current 500mm, their IS is two-stops better (I hand hold 99.9% of my super-tele shots) and the AF function with the new Series III TCs is much faster. The only thing in the way is the cost.

With either the X or the MkIII, you'll want the Series II lenses, IF you can afford them. Those of you that shoot jpegs will appreciate that the X does in-camera correction of lens errors, which is particularly important with zooms. (I now do it automatically with DxO in post, but few people use DxO).

Here's my thinking:
Sell MkII $1,500
Buy MkIII (3,500)
Sell 500mm 6,100
Buy 600mm (12,000)
Net (7,900)
The 600mm Series II should hold its value well and can be considered an "investment", while the body will be replaced in three to five years.

I need to sign up some new consulting clients....

between the new 5DmkIII and the new 24-70 F2.8 mkII there's going to be a lot of broke photographers this year...

I hope these products are worth the premium or were going to see a lot of Canon owners thinking that Nikon isn't looking so bad.
