Went to take delivery of my new 2022 Z4 M40i on 02/10/23 — And Boom! Stop Sale

Major buzz kill.

Dealer informed me just before I left for my delivery appointment this past Friday that they were informed of a Stop Sale attached to my new 2022 Z4. The car is on the ground, my financing was in place, etc etc.

The Stop Sale was made effective February 09, 2023.

There is no remedy available yet. Therefore no timetable.

Affected Vehicles:
-Z4
-8 Series
-2 Series Coupe

“The wireless charging tray will mot recognize the digital key removal. As a result, some functions like window sunroof, and convertible top operation could remain active.

The bulletin will be updated when additional information becomes available.”

BMW Dealers cannot sell new, used, or Certified vehicles that have this stop sale attached to the VIN. I’m not sure if it’s across the board or VIN-specific.

=====

Even though in my case the Stop Sale was made effective the day before my delivery, it seems that the Dealer had no reason to know about the Stop Sale until the time of delivery — when they do a key check. I highly recommend that anyone about to purchase any Z4 have a conversation with the BMW Dealer about the Stop Sale and check the VIN.

Does anyone else know about this too and have any additional information?
Also feel free to rant!

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it gets resolved soon. Same thing noted here:

Wait does this mean all z4 with wireless charging tray? What changed from before? Maybe they will finally reengineer it

The wireless charging tray overheats your phone and proves completely useless once again… you think bmw could just move it into the center console in a vertical fashion with a fan… so sorry, that must be super frustrating.

Interesting it’s just those 3 vehicles. Are the charging pads different in other models?

Glad I found this post, my dealer told me about the same thing with no clarity. And I was like why don’t you tell me this earlier…

Please let me know if you have any updates. I will do the same.

I reached out to BMW genius as well, they also confirmed my car is on stop sale.

I received my MY23 Z4 about a month ago. It has the wireless charging tray and it works fairly well.

I just asked my sales person and she says there is no stop sale on mine yet. It’s at the port so fingers crossed!

This is apparently due to a change in the part number of the wireless charging tray.
Certification is probably delayed in many countries.

Perhaps it's too much to hope that it's a solution to the overheating issue and that a retrofit might become available.

So let’s see.

Hey BMW! If you’re listening…

Would you please change your mind on this and simply tell the BMW Dealers to sell the cars WITHOUT the credit-card style digital key? Ummm we really don’t “need” that stupid key… we can go back to the dealer later and obtain one after you’ve figured out the problem.

What’s that? You don’t trust the dealers to competently execute that command?

We sort of understand. We don’t trust the dealers to do much right either.

But still… no reason to stop the wheels from turning if the car could simply be sold without the stupid digital key. You’re shooting yourselves and people who earn a living selling cars in the foot… and causing customers to be unhappy.

Overheating issue is the fault of the nature of the universe, not BMW’s fault. A smartphone heats up when it’s being charged. If the heat is trapped by placing the smartphone on a surface of a material without a high specific heat characteristic and which doesn’t radiate a cooler temperature, the smartphone will warm up. You’ll notice that if you place your smartphone on a granite or quartz countertop (without any case) while charging, it doesn’t warm up significantly.

The idea of wireless charging in a car is not feasible unless the surface beneath is extremely cool. We aren’t going to build a mini refrigerator for a wireless charging pad. Probably can’t have a fan either since the surface would need to have the inductive device underneath the surface. Maybe a top-loaded fan. In any case, wireless charging in a car will not be practical unless it’s implemented in a very thoughtful way.

Took delivery 1/31 of our Z4, and there was an $80 reduction for removal of digital key. So I’m thinking this is already possible, but I don’t know if that change was from factory or upon arrival. I use the digital key for the X5 about once a month. It’s nice to have but definitely not necessary.

That has not been my experience. Of course, smartphones will heat up when they're charging. That is not what we're talking about.

I had wireless charging in the closed center console of my '19 MINI convertible and, in 4+ years, it overheated only once on a brutally hot day with the top down.

I have wireless charging in my '20 Subaru Outback and it has never overheated in my 3+ years of ownership.

I charge my iPhone 13 Pro on my wireless charger every single night and it has never overheated.

Clearly there are ways to implement wireless charging effectively without overheating. I've been witness to it.

.almost certainly at the factory. When I was shopping '22 models, you had to order the wireless charging in order to get the digital key. Otherwise, your build sheet would list a build code showing removal of the digital key. It was even listed in the summary of your online build.

I also have other wireless chargers that work fine with my phone, but have issue with the BMW one. I’ve also used 3 different phones with the same results.

That is why I constantly post that people should save $500 and not order the BMW wireless charger. 😉

I have a ‘23 Z that I drive around town frequently. I put my phone in the charger but have yet to have it heat up. How long does it take to overheat? I also had a ‘22 850 that would overheat on long trips.

It will heat up pretty quickly. My iphone (8 Plus) got extremely warm in only 15 minutes of test drive time in a 2020 Z4. The kicker was that the charge didn't really increase in that 15 minutes - it just warmed the phone up dramatically.

Also, I think the problem is more common to iPhones and may not affect Android devices to the same degree or at all.

EDIT - Maybe worth mentioning that I did not have Apple Carplay enabled during the test ride, and was not actively using it for anything in particular.
