Dealer says "wait for allocation" for Z4 manual

My local dealerships says that they won't process an order until they get allocations. When I pointed out that other dealerships are apparently placing orders, they said "they aren't actually placing orders, they are just putting you on a wait list"

That sounds like total BS to me... or perhaps other dealerships do have allocations, and they don't?

Has anyone else heard anything like this?

Yes, heard something similar. Matter of fact, this Tuesday Feb 6th morning. That afternoon I was told they got the allocation and my order was confirmed.

Allocations should be fairly abundant, it's only a matter of time.

I thought that was how it worked. You can't actually place the order until an allocation comes up.

Dealers can place an order into the "order bank", it'll have a status code. This nudges BMW in terms of their ability to predict demand but doesn't guarantee you anything.

If an order is in the order bank and an allocation becomes available it's supposed to automatically match the order bank to the allocation in order.

Yeah that’s bullshit. What you want is a vehicle inquiry. That’s effectively a request to place an order pending an allocation. You’ll be in status 047, which is better than “don’t call us we will call you”. 047 is not in any way a guarantee you’re getting a car but it’s better than nothing. If your local dealer isn’t big they may only get half a dozen Z4 allocations of any kind this year, so best to get in it or find another dealer.

Did a "paper order"

I ended up putting down a deposit and doing a "paper order" at another dealership. So, now I'm just "first in line" for when an allocation actually appears. Hey, that's better than nothing...

The dealership is part of a huge company with 8 or so BMW dealerships all over the US. So, the sales manager says she will attempt to find a dealership that could make a trade on a "modifiable allocation" to speed things along.

Here is something that I learned... the allocations are specific to the Z4 sDrive30i and Z4 M40i (so one allocation can't be used for the other)

That's what I found, too. Dealer got a 30i on the way, while I was waiting to get an M40 allocation. Seems odd, but there you go.

(ended up getting one out of state).

I had an order in the order bank a week or two ago and my dealership flipped it to a manual this week. My build week is March 10! So there are definitely dealerships that are getting allocations and orders placed. Good luck!
