So the Supra lives on, but the Z dies? It’s a travesty.

Dealership where I purchased Z4 claims BMW is going to release a new Z4 and it will no longer be a partnership with Toyota….separate ways.
Since things have been so quiet on the Z4 future, I’m in the opinion that is a unsubstantiated rumor.

Looks like a more modern interpretation of the C7 Corvette to me (I mean this in a good way).

I'm sure Toyota wasn't thrilled with the whole "the best Toyota is a BMW" narrative.

“The next-generation cockpit offers intuitive controls and a more immersive driving experience.”

This is going to be interesting in the near future as cars move more towards full automation. Options such as Active Cruise are becoming standard. People will expect electric vehicals to drive themselves. It will make the human act of driving little more then a backup to autopilot. Keeping the thrill of driving a sports car in an electrified future will be no easy task imo.

Have ya'll ever driven a square steering wheel? I did in a Tesla once and I was not a fan. I can't imagine drifting with a square steering wheel.

My wife has a Tesla MS with a yoke. I am also not a fan, but I am not the primary driver. I've made it clear I would be happy to pay for the wheel retrofit. The problem isn't just that it's a yoke, it's that it has the same turning range as a wheel. If the yoke turned maybe a bit over 180 degrees from lock to lock, it _might_ be okay.

OTOH, doesn't the C8 have a square-ish wheel?

Definitely. Yokes are meant to not be released at all, it's silly to have it if you have to move your hands to go lock to lock. It's extra silly to cover it with capacitive-touch buttons on top of that.

Yeah, but the corners are kinda rounded so it's not too far-off from an actual wheel.

I like flat bottom steering wheels, but the wheel in the Z is a good size.

TBH I think the partnership held back both cars. Untethered from the Supra (budget sports car), BMW could make a true premium sports roadster/coupe.

At this point though, the next Z is certain to be an EV.

PS - That Supra concept looks cool though!

I'd personally be okay with that. I love the Z4, but if we had real options today for an EV convertible sports car, I would have definitely looked. We will see EV sports cars from Porsche and maybe even MG in a couple of years, but I needed the car this year.

I'm more than a little miffed that Tesla didn't continue (and evolve) their original roadster rather than promise a vaporware hypercar with too many seats. My wife's Tesla is in for service, so she was forced (ahem) to drive the Z4 yesterday. She was a bit miffed to have to stop for gas :-)

More than a few sources are claiming that Toyota also has plans to revive the MR2 and Celica models soon. The renderings look as good as the the Supra concept.

Would there even have been a G29 Z4 without Toyota?

IMO it was a beneficial partnership for both at a time that made sense. As everyone is being forced into EV’s the time is running out on ICE drop top 2 seaters.

You didn’t leave it on empty, did you?

EV roadsters do nothing for me. The joy of a roadster is going for long drives and listening to the music of the engine and exhaust note.

No, it had plenty of gas for her round trip. But she got stuck in traffic and and had an attack of ICE range anxiety :-)

I've never understood people who feel the need to fill up (or charge) even though the range indicator shows you have plenty of range left for your trip.

In most cars the "low fuel" alert comes on at a quarter tank (which is still at least 50 miles of range).
