I remember seeing it 'live' on telly(we are here CET, GMT +1/2 depending), is that possible?

I was 15y.o and I remember it had a lot of impact on me....

Cheers

That is a sobering thought, but in the very least to go with it, one would have to believe that Scoob (and others) were not sitting there passively, or even just screaming, but were actively trying to save themselves/crew.

There are a few things that stick in my mind.

One is this tragedy. I was working at the space center when this happened. I had gone home for some lunch and on the way back the flags were at half mast.

The second is the World Trade Center. After the first plane went into the tower we were contacted to put a crew together to go help get things back in order. When the second plane hit, we were told to stand down, something is not right.....

The third was Shock and Awe.

Damn skippy.

There's not a professional pilot out there (and I know a few) that wouldn't have tried to pull every trick in the book to "dead stick" it in and pull off a miracle-- it's hard wired into you after training-- you never, ever give up on the jet until after impact.

Even if you *know* you're going to die, you don't give up the fight.

I was a year old in Soviet Russia. I only remember the events surrounding the STS 107. I was good friends with the son of the pilot William McCool.

I was 6 years old and lived in Orlando so we went outside into the fields at our elementary school to watch the launch. I didn't understand what really happened at the time, but I can remember the shock on my teachers face and tears streaming down her face as we watched it all happen right in front us.

That night my parents explained what happened and tried to explain what life and death mean. I don't remember much from that era of time but I can still remember that day vividly.

One of the things that sticks in my mind was Reagan's speech to the nation afterwards. I realize he had a very talented speech writer, (Peggy Noonan, I believe), but still, he delivered it perfectly. Very touching and dignified.

I remember this and the 2003 Columbia tragedy. A reminder that human space flight remains a dangerous thing.

There were odds early of one flight in nine ending in disaster.

I am very pro science and discovery, etc. But there is really no reason anymore of sending people in space. 'bots can do it better and a Challenger full of 'bots is no problem.

Going to the moon was great for the U.S. and it helped technology, but not a lot. We could have probably had a mechanized lunar landing before 1969 at a fraction of the cost. The bulk of the cost was in cutting risk.

I can still remember the day like it was yesterday M_Six. Just left basketball practice (Mannheim High School, Mannheim Germany) and made our way to the bowling alley with some teammates. As we walked in there was complete silence, and everyone was focused on AFN as Dan Rather (CBS) was breaking the news of what had just transpired. Truly a sorrowful day in America history.

This is where some of us romantics/dreamers who still love robots would have to disagree. "What is over there?" is why the first several iterations of the Enterprise where built, to get to the other side of that great ocean. Space is just a waterless ocean.
