Z4 reliability so far

After reading through the C8 Corvette threads….some horror stories over there.

I was wondering how our G29 Z4’s have been holding up?

I don’t see engine fires, transmissions needing replacement or any serious issues being reported . Thankfully things seem to be more random issues here and there.

The C8 is initially in a similar price range but those will be much more expensive to maintain as they age. I think we got it good folks

OK well... mine is a daily driver. Had my 30i for about 2.5 years. No issues. I also baby it in the sense that I keep it clean and keep it maintained. No warranty issues, replaced my OEM tires at about 18,000 miles and put on some Michelin Pilot A/S tires. Did a review of the car at my 12-month anniversary as a daily driver. Had about 21,000 miles on it total by the time I traded it in for the M40i.

It's a solid car. honestly..

I've had mine 6 months as of today and it has a bit over 2500 miles. No issues at all. It's been a very reliable joy to drive.

Took delivery 14 months ago at PDC. Not a daily. Approx. 8200 miles.

No squeaks, rattles, or any issues (other than self-inflicted). I accidentally deleted my Z4 from the BMW Owners website while intending to delete a previous vehicle I no longer own. That caused all my connected services on the Z4 to be terminated simultaneously. I had to be in my Z4 to re-register through the My BMW App to regain the connected services. The only thing that hasn't returned is the "My Trips" feature in the My BMW App. Can't get it to work following the process in the app/car. BMW Geniuses are working on a case to try and figure it out.

I had the Amp/Booster replaced under warranty right after purchase of my CPO 2021. Bass would cut out/drop out completely randomly requiring car to be shut off to bring back audio to normal level.

Original owner should have had it replaced, this Z4 was built in the timeframe of bad batch of boosters that went into many BMW’s produced in 2020 (most G series cars, actually caused a full sales stop back then once BMW identified the issue).

So anyone picking up a 2021 used, be aware of this.

Perhaps all of these positive reviews is a reflection of how good the QC is at Magna Steyr in Austria where the G29 is manufactured?

I would say their build quality is very good!

Ive belonged to the vette forums for nearly 20 years and it was my first true sports car so I’m still active on the boards. Really eye opening the issues the C8 is having even 4+ years into production, DCT issues, delaminating dashboards on 3LT trim (their top level trim)
There are more then a few people posting about how they will be getting out of their C8’s once warranty period is over….the DCT taking a dump is like 20k for replacement. Every regular fluid service on it is over 1k alone.

The Z4 looks like it will be closer to Miata money in consumables/service in comparison!

Just something to consider cause the Z4 gets panned for being “too expensive” in the realm of 2 seat convertible sports cars as a new purchase, but with its solid driveline reliability and lower service costs, I think it’s going to be a desirable car for many years into the future while other sports car become a servicing money pit.

Yeah, my only beef is how so many BMW components must be coded when replaced, adding labor cost and/or making self repairs much more challenging. Sure, software is available but the learning curve is pretty steep and the risk of screwing something up if done incorrectly is significant. I see posts almost daily on the bimmerfest forum, owners begging for help to unscrew their missteps.

It also helps that the drive train and ID7 electronics are pretty much identical to the Gxx 3/4-series cars. Higher production numbers help with identifying and fixing issues early.

Vehicle built 11/2019 and I purchased it new on 06/2020.
As of today, 12/02/2023, my M40i has 23k miles.

No issues except for 1 set of tires and what a valet did to my front bumper.

In the 2 years I have been posting in this forum I haven’t seen too many serious complaints. 👍🏻

Not troublefree

my emergency brake has been stuck on several times causing the car to not move and forcing dealer visits. One of the rubber pads that the convertible top sits on on top of the windshield frame fell out and had to be replaced. the wireless phone charger is a disaster. carplay has been sketchy. opening the trunklid caused the burger alarm to go off every time until the dealer installed some new software. Lots of small things. No fires or engine failures though lol.

Were you at a McDonalds drive through when the burger alarm went off?

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Seriously, that sounds like quite a long list for a modern day car, of any make. I have no idea about Corvettes, but the Japanese and German cars I’ve bought over the last 10 years have literally been trouble free.

The one and only warranty claim I had was on a British built Range Rover Evoque because upon delivery the Centre console was missing a screw, causing it to move up and down if I pressed down on it. That same car had a split turbo hose, but that was after 4 years, so I give it a partial pass for that. Although I never had anything like that happen on Japanese and German cars.

I had this on mine, and also luckily under warranty as the booster module would've been kinda expensive according to the service rep. Another thing on mine was service found some leaked oil somewhere around the gear box and drive shaft. They opted to change some drive shaft gasket and do a gear box oil change.

Have had two cars, 30i and 40i, 38k total miles between them, no real problems to speak of. The only annoyance I could mention is the phone overheating issue when it's parked in the forward center console area. There just seems to be no good answer with the top down in any kind of heat other than to leave my phone in my pocket.

That being said, happy camper here.

I have 36K miles on my 2020 that I purchased in July 2020 with 7K on it with no problems other than the stitching in driver seat separating which was covered under warranty, I'm on my second set of summer tires and will probably need new winters after this season. The only real recurring problem I have is wheels that keep getting out of round due to NY potholes.

I've had mine for about 2 years. Had a somewhat major issue last year with the mechanical oil and vacuum pump needing replacement, luckily it was under warranty. Took about a month for BMW to figure it out and fix it, from scouring multiple forums mine seems to be an outlier. 22k miles, 2019 sdrive30i here.
