The HPDI at my closest track (Corvette track) welcomes convertibles, but the HDPE states "Convertibles MUST HAVE SCCA legal rollover protection to participate in HPDEs".

While doing a track course in my Fiat Spider, they required the top to be up, but it was in their own cars and a follow the leader, so not exactly full out.

Is this track specific? Does the Z4 meet that requirement? Has anyone any experience with this?
It's going to be a combination of track + club rules. If the club i.e., your BMW CCA chapter has a rule against convertibles, then forget it, but even if they don't, ask the event organizer - the track might have rules against them. Get a definitive yes/no from the organizer before registering so you don't waste your time.

Porsche club is more receptive to convertibles because of the Boxster, but they are still bound by the track's rules.

I was just looking up Lime Rock the other day and while it may change based on who is running the event, the track had a broomstick rule of 2" clearance over the helmet and factory rollover protection. They specifically mentioned Z4 rollover protection as being acceptable as long as the helmet height qualified. I'm only 5'6" so I shouldn't have a problem but taller folks might come closer.

This! NCRC was okay with convertibles. And if there was any issue with rollover protection they would have known about it. These brothers run a great HPDE event.

Groups I've ran my Boxster with have a rule that your helmet "must not touch a stick" between the top of the windshield frame and the roll hoops.
