I used to know a guy named Pat Jeski in MI who was single and built a dream home. Very large high ceiling shop with pit, lifts and a bathroom and bar, plus hanging-out area. Small attached apartment one bedroom, kitchen, tv room. Really cool design - had it on facebook for a while so might find old pics there (2009 ish). |

The only thing I could get with more money that I actually want is greater security (financial) which would allow more travel. I’m retired and OK, but it is the retiree’s nature to worry about money vs lifespan. I’ve lost my interest in stuff, it just doesn’t do anything for me anymore.

Just to clarify something - there is no general NEC requirement for receptacle height, although some state codes (CA) do specify. It is very common to put garage or basement receptacles at 48-54”, or estimate the height so that it is above a 48” wide sheet of plywood standing next to the wall. If you want a receptacle at a weird height because it makes sense to you, go for it.
Where it can get complicated is the kitchen receptacles, especially with multiple short counters, islands or peninsula with no adjacent wall, plug-in vs hard-wired for some appliances, etc. |

We're building the Garage Mahal for us as a retirement home, not worrying about potential future resale. No granite counters, marble bathrooms, fancy cabinets, etc. I also prefer portable partitions as space dividers, keeping the interior wall count down to near zero with everything portable. Speaking of bathrooms, I want the guest bathroom to be a plastic handicapped porta-potty in the garage area. I can see the look of disgust on a guest's face now when they ask to use the bathroom and I point them to the porta-potty. When they open the door expecting to be greeted with a dark/smelly experience, the light will automatically turn on and reveal a commercial flush toilet, sink, and other features of a modern bathroom housed inside. Oh yeah, commercial flush toilets with proper Sloan valves in all bathrooms, because I despise waiting for a home-grade toilet tank to refill between flushes.....

I'm 36 now and friend group keeps getting smaller lol. I realize a big aspect of this now is actively choosing a child-free life, and a lot of people connect that way. Making new friend connections is JUST like dating when you're older, and you just don't want to have much to do with the majority of them lol.

Then, as I've made friends living in various states, you'll lose some of those close bonds, but again, not because their bad friends, life just takes over and things fizzle. It's up to us to keep relationships and friendships consistent, whether it be talking once a year, or once a day. |

I went through the same about 10 years ago. I started cutting damaging relationships out, then looked around and realized there wasn't anyone around. It's sad when we can't afford mediocre performance. |

I will say when we traveled in our RV I did enjoy travel days. Mainly because I would typically only drive 3-4 hours a day and when I was done I had all my shit and house right there with me no matter where we were. I think it spoiled me and made me hate other travel modes even more. |

If we're going to open up the thread to things other than what money can buy, I wish my mom and my older sister were living so that I could be with them.

I don't need anything, but I wouldn't mind having a North American P-51D Mustang and John Milner's Deuce Coupe to get to the airport.
