Chinook?
Thinking about a convertible. Some z4 reviews have complained about quite a bit of wind/noise with top down. Haven’t heard about this with Porsche Boxster, 911 cab, or Audi s5.
Owners- thoughts? Thx |

Go test drive one and see if it bothers you. It doesn’t bother me, and it didn’t seem any worse than the 2014 Turbo S Cabriolet, 458 Spider, and Lotus Elise I had previously. But, maybe I’m not sensitive to wind sheer noise.

Thanks. Won't be able to test drive for a while with pandemic lock down. But good to hear— z4 reviewers seem to make mention of it more than other convertibles.

Wind noise seems slightly less than my Jaguar was.....a bit more than our SLK350 and about the same as a Boxster....

6 of one half a dozen of the other. It's a roadster & there will be wind noise.
Seriously, gets noisy at interstate speeds but other than that no real issue.

It's not that bad. My wife and I can have a conversation at normal talking volume with the top down but the windows up, even at reasonable freeway speeds.

The chinook sound also exists on my F150. It's an aerodynamic issue and under a significant influence how high or low the windows are raised, using the factory wind defector or not. I've never heard this sound with windows all the way up or all the way down on my Z.

Ditto. As long as I remember to turn down the radio, I can converse with passenger pretty normally. Have also had several handsfree phone calls as 75+MPH that were surprisingly intelligible. |

Not an issue at all
Not even almost an issue. I do business calls with the top down at highway speed frequently and the noise levels and wind levels are easily managed by the phone system in the car. People don't even know that the top is down. The car is brilliantly designed. Way more comfortable than the E89 before it.

The seatbelt in the neck thing objects to absolute use of the "brilliantly designed" comment. The seat belt is a highly annoying peeve that affects tall and short, skinny and fat that have ridden in my car--only alleviated when wearing stiff collars (work shirts) or coats -- but there is another thread for that oh, and the lack of a functional spot to keep my PPE (if the Miata could fit the .45 easily, and with a lockable center console, I mean it is even a German arm in a German car--like they are made for each other) . . . I digress |
