If you enter 2021 instead of 2022 they show the Pilot SS tires still available. For some reason many sites have not updated their software to include the 2022's. I have also seen this happen when looking for parts and accessories.

Tire Life

Drove back from an event with coworkers last night. About 1 hour drive, mostly highway. Heavy rain, wet roads, some standing water.

It was a white knuckle drive. I guess I need new tires, too. Although the Z4 was never great in the rain, I don't recall it being that bad.

How many miles have you driven on them?

18,852 miles.

Advisor said they were fine when I had the car in for service in April.

And the car handles great on dry road.

Was hoping to get through this season and maybe maybe get a new Z4 in spring depending on how much I like the LCI and whether pricing normalizes a bit. If not, get mine new tires and keep it.

Why don't you purchase an inexpensive tire thread depth gauge?

New PSS tread depth is 10/32". 9 after 14K sounds not possible.

Used two different brands of this tool and got the same results.

Do you measure from the ‘bridge’ (whatever the technical term is), or all the way to the bottom of the groove?

Stating the obvious (?): tire wear is not uniform, so depending on where you measure, there may be a day and night difference.

Yeah I actually looked into this a little closer. I was getting anywhere between 8 and 7 depending on the spot. 9 was wrong, looked again.

10K -15K miles on a set of $2K tires is not great. I am at 6.5K miles now and the tread is still good. My next set will be something that can last 20K+.

Got the tire thread measurement tool people have been recommending. Yellow and barely green for most part.

Probably should replace now?

18,954 miles

I must have been baby'ing it lol

Fun fact, but I've actually used multiple sets of PSS, PS4 and DWS over the years. Both street and HPDE.

All of them are quite good, and provide long life. The treadwear warranty (via Discount Tire) has been great. They wear evenly if you keep them inflated properly.

For a staggered setup, Michelin provides 30k warranty on the front tires, and 15k on the rear. I don't know the DWS, because I was square at that time.

If I were buying tires that needed to be useful on street, track, and under 40 degrees, I'd get the DWS without hesitation.

I'm not sad to have PSS as OEM. YMMV. This thread reminds me to stop by Discount Tire and see if they still sell certificates for new cars. I normally just use their "free" prorated hazard protection.

Did that on 2 cars.
I don't think Star BMW is required for a lease turn in:

https://www.bmwusa.com/return-vehicl...ion-guidelines

Same specifications as original equipment supplied on your vehicle (size, speed rating, and run flat, if applicable)

If you replace the tires, charges will be assessed for each tire that is not of equal size, quality, and speed rating as your original tires. (You can find the speed rating label on the inside of the vehicle’s door jam.) Also, acceptable wear is a minimum of 4/32 of an inch of depth from the finish tread. Your Ding-O-Meter can help you to identify whether or not your tire falls within our guidelines. Your BMW Center will be able to provide you with a final, more precise measurement using a tire tread depth gauge. Tires with cuts or gouges will result in additional lease end charges. Please note: If your vehicle originally came equipped with run-flat tires, then your vehicle must be returned with run-flat tires. Otherwise you will be charged for new tires.

Canada goes a step farther and lists acceptable brands.

https://www.bmw.ca/en/topics/owners/...dard-wear.html
(approved brands are Michelin®, Pirelli®, Bridgestone®, Continental®, Dunlop®, Goodyear®, and Hankook®.)

This goes round & round. Last lease turn in for me was in 2018 & there were a lot of threads then where guys were dinged for non star tires. Don't see why a current turn in with non star Michelin's can't get hit with a charge.

A number of brands do not offer star tires & are delivered on BMW's. No issue with those.

Michelin sells Star & non Star versions of the same tire. The non start tires did not meet BMW specs. This might be of interest in the section:

BMW says Same specifications as original equipment supplied on your vehicle (size, speed rating, and run flat, if applicable). The * and the non star after-market are not of the same spec, not even close.

Expect its a crap shoot on the turn in check. You could skate through or get your balls busted with non star Michelins

The BMW finance guy on my last transaction was the shadiest tool I have ever done business with. So I'm certainly not at all surprised that a dealer will try to stick you with fees, regardless of whether they are warranted.
